Meet the Author

Cleo Coyle is the pen name for a multipublished author who collaborates with her husband to write the nationally bestselling Coffeehouse Mysteries. Although they did not meet until adulthood, Cleo and her husband had very similar upbringings. Both were children of food-loving Italian immigrants, and both grew up in working-class neighborhoods outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, before moving to the Big Apple to begin their postcollege careers: Cleo as a journalist and children’s book and media tie-in author; and her husband as a magazine editor and writer. After finally meeting and falling in love, they married at the Little Church of the West in Las Vegas. Now they live and work in New York City, where they each write books independently and together, cook like crazy, haunt local coffeehouses, and drink a lot of joe. Among their many coauthored projects are the Haunted Bookshop Mysteries, written under the pen name Alice Kimberly.

Cleo enjoys hearing from readers. Visit her virtual Village Blend coffeehouse, where she also posts recipes and coffee industry news…

    more from this reviewer

    Smelling the coffee

I've just read my second Cleo Coyle book and I can smell the coffee. I still can't grind or brew the sacred bean half as well as the author, but I'm learning some facts. I know how to test whether the beans were fresh when I get my cup-never knew that before. And I know a little more about where they grow.
Cleo Coyle sets her mysteries around the Village Blend coffee house in New York. Decaffeinated espresso is described as a "why bother," but it seems there may a new brew on the block that's decaffeinated and delicious. Clare Cosi runs the store and lives upstairs with her ex-husband, son of the delightfully quirky French owner and close friend of the seller of decaffeinated beans. But there's more than coffee in the air, and would a mugger really just be trying to steal a plant?
Business opportunity might turn to disaster, and scheming lovers might end up in jail on charges of murder, but Clare's friend the policeman drinks his latte and keeps his feet on the ground while others fly through the air. The story's fun, exciting and mysterious. The background (and scent of coffee) is delightful. The relationships are cool and intriguing, Madame ever the coolest of course; and the book is great fun.
Time for some caffeine now I think before I go shopping for more.

    This series is a winner

I've read all of the books in the Coffeehouse Mystery series and this one does not disappoint. Detective Mike Quinn has a bigger role this time out as Clare must not only solve two murders but also get her ex-husband off the NYPD's 'persons of interest' list for both of them. It all starts with a mysterious coffee tree cutting. This cutting is the first of its kind and very valuable because it can grow a decaffeinated coffee plant. Someone wants this cutting so badly that he or she is willing to kill for it. Is it one of Clare's baristas? An associate of the man who discovered the plant? Or a business rival? Clare takes us to Brooklyn's Botanic Garden, an international coffee industry party near the UN, the Village Halloween Parade. Lots of interesting info about coffee trees and how coffee is grown and farmed. There's also a return of favorite characters. I love Madame and she is back and is as entertaining as ever. There's also a big leap for Clare in her relationship with Detective Quinn that fans of this series should not miss. I really enjoyed this installment and I'm actually glad the author went back to the original coffeehouse setting after taking us to the Hamptons in Murder Most Frothy. There's just something wonderful about Clare's coffeehouse. I'm already looking forward to the next book in this series.

    Predictable

The newest coffee house installment mimics the same plots found in the first three books of the series. Although the main characters make changes in their lives, I did not find them as interesting as they were in previous books. The mystery has a few unique twists and turns, but the book ends in the same pattern used in each one of the other coffee house mysteries. This a true 'cozy' mystery without much depth.
