Overview

Leonie Saint-Andre, the granddaughter of an old Creole gentleman, thinks Morgan Slade is a scoundrel.

Morgan, the son of a wealthy Natchez plantation family, thinks Leonie is a clever liar.

Leonie claims Morgan married her, and fathered her five-year-old son. All she wants is her dowry returned to pay her dead grandfather's gambling debts and save their home.

Morgan knows that he accepted neither dowry, nor Leonie's hand in marriage. But the woman before him awakens emotions he never thought he'd feel again.

But that doesn't give reason for the imposter who signed his name to the marriage papers Leonie holds or why her son bears such a striking resemblance to Morgan himself.

Leonie's strength and determination make this a good read, and Morgan's character makes a great foil for hers. I love that I get a fairly accurate "history lesson" along with a considerable dose of entertainment.

This is the first book I read of Shirlee's, and it made me an instant fan. After I started reading it, I couldn't put it down, even reading it while cooking, cleaning and other chores. When I went to bed, I continued reading, and remember finishing it about 3:00 AM. When the last page of the book was closed, I said on a sigh, "Wow!" I turned it over, looked at it, and started reading it all over again. From that moment, she became my favorite author, and I have never been disappointed with any of her books.

a classic historical romance that's a classic bodice ripper. Feisty heroine, smoking hot bad boy lover, hot love scenes. Great summer read

As other posters have stated, constant, repetitive ruminating by main characters made this book waaaay too long. 150 pages would probably have been sufficient to tell this story. Would not recommend. Wore me out just trudging through to get to the resolution of the book.

I read this years ago, and still have it, but I got it on my nook also.

Took to long to get to the point. To childish for my taste. Adult like behavior missing.

I didnt mind the characters' personalities as much as other reviewers, but I had two major issues. The first was that I felt that the forays into the history of the time were too lengthy. If this was historical fiction with romantic elements it would have made more sense, but the history passages were so infrequent that it was always a bit strange when they popped up and felt more like a history lesson than an integral part of the story. Most of them served no true purpose with regards to advancing the story. *SPOILER ALERT* My other big issue was how the author eventually handled the characters' realizations that her son was actually THEIR son. Regardless of Morgan's intent on the night the child was conceived, Leonie had felt like she was raped, and I have trouble believing that the trauma of that can just magically be blown away by the realization that it was the man she now loves. I completely understand that he didn't realize she was unwilling on the night in question; I'm not disputing that. When she initially tells Morgan how Justin was conceived it is blatantly obvious that being raped still affects her; but when they figure out it was Morgan everything is suddenly acceptable to her? I don't know if that was because the other major conflict had just been resolved and it was decided that dealing with another issue immediately after would be too much, or if the publisher decided the book needed to end already (as others have said, this novel is lengthy), but it was very abrupt and seems illogical to me. *END SPOILER* So, three stars. I enjoyed the characters and how they learned to work together as a couple, but my other issues with the book kept me from really enjoying it and make me hesitant to purchase anything else by her.

Good book with well developed characters. It also gave an accurate history lesson of the time. However I agree with some of the other reviews that it was very long and tended to drag and take too long to get to the point. It is 475 pages!

The only reason I kept reading is because I really wanted to know how the book ends. Otherwise, I would have stopped reading after 50 pages. It's slow-moving and takes forever to get to the point. Many minor details are repeated over and over again.

It was just as great the second time around. Shirley Busbee is a great romance writer. If you haven't tried her please do so.

Not much of a story line, just the same old run of the mill romance. Good for a time when you don't want much plot or action.

And good characters. A little too wordy, but definitely worth the read.
