Overview

They're here, and they're real. . .werewolves, vampires, mages, and other creatures of the night. For New York P.I. Shiarra Waynest, taking care of Others business started out as a way to stay solvent. But now business is getting very, very complicated. . .

Shiarra's relationship with sexy werewolf Chaz may be somewhat unconventional. Still, after a few bumps, Shia is finally ready to get serious. That means meeting family--or in this case, bringing Chaz's entire werewolf pack along for a rollicking full-moon weekend in the Catskills.

Soon after they arrive, threatening notes appear, warning Chaz to go home. Then their cabin is ransacked. Shia starts digging to find out whether it's the work of upstart teenaged werewolves or something more sinister. Yet as rumors about her vampire connections arouse the pack's hostility, Shia has to contend with other dangers. Not just from an adversary about to make his fatal intentions known, but from a threat that's even closer than she knows. . .

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Haines follows Hunted by the Others and Taken by the Others with an episodic tale of werewolves, vampires, and the women who love them. Shiarra Waynest, private investigator, is off for a vacation in the Catskills with her werewolf boyfriend, Chaz, who wants to introduce her to his pack and see how they get along. The pack has decided opinions on the matter, most of them unfavorable due to Shiarra's association with vampires. Threatening notes, the trashing of their shared cabin, and an attack by an angry pack member are bad enough, but when Shiarra discovers Chaz is involved with another woman, she flees. This installment of what is clearly intended to be a longrunning series lacks any feeling of completeness, leaving numerous plot threads unresolved. (July)

I've become rather addicted to Shiarra's story. The characters are great. I really feel I can see them, hear them when i read these books. Can't wait to see more in the series. Really loved that the story is becoming more and more dynamic. But i think at the end of the day, I just want more Alec Royce. He's hot and I have a pretty bad crush on him since, well, since they met :) I think we will continue to see that Shiarra's expectations aren't quite right and while the Others may not be the monsters she thought they were, they are still plenty dangerous.

It's that time of the month, and Shiarra Waynest, New York City P.I., is determined to take a vacation with her sexy werewolf boyfriend Chaz and his pack as they seek a refuge during their transformation. Despite warnings from the annoying reporter who's stalking her and the sexy vampire to whom she's legally bound, she leaves her job, her friends, and the city behind to head for the woods where she will face unexpected dangers from more than just the wildlife. Deceived by the Others is the third book in the H&W Investigations series, and I felt, at first, as if I had missed something. By the third chapter, however, I was totally absorbed in the world that had been created, and the pace moved quickly. The plot took a shocking turn that I didn't see coming, and I skipped my evening workout so that I could keep reading and find out what happened. While the ending definitely left most of the plot unresolved, I am totally hooked by the brave main character and the difficulties she faces, and I cannot wait for the next book in the series.

New York based private investigator Shiarra Waynest and her boyfriend Chaz the werewolf are vacationing in the Catskills. She was especially looking for 24/7 sex in their remote cabin. However, she knows his pack will spend the full moon howling with them as he hopes his clan accepts her though he fears most of his brood will be irate with Shiarra's professional association with vampires. However, their alone time is disrupted when someone breaks into their cabin and trashes it. The culprit left behind several nasty notes filled with rage especially at Shiarra but also at Chaz for carousing with the enemy. Soon after a pack member assaults Shiarra and she learns her boyfriend has another female. Knowing it is time to go home, she leaves. The third H&W Investigations (see Hunted by the Others and Taken by the Others) is an entertaining tale but feels like a transition set up novel as no major subplot is resolved. Still series fans will enjoy the fast-paced thriller that establishes several threads for future entities, which includes the lead couple having to deal with cross-species issues. Harriet Klausner

Jess Haines is a very talented author with great potential. The story line was fast paced and interesting even though I have not read the two previous books. My complaint: I'm tired of books that are around 300 to 400 pages and leave a reader hanging for one to three years for the next installment. Editors need to guide their authors to write books that go farther along the story line. This just leaves a reader hanging and I'm not willing to do that. Diana Gabledon is a great example of an author with a series that has substantial reading material and a great story line that goes from book to book with well over 1000 pages each time. I don't mind paying more money for more pages. I want more bang for my buck. I probably won't be buying more of this authors work because I find this frustrating.
