Overview

"One of the best long-running SF series in existence" (Publishers Weekly) continues with the second novel in a brand-new Foreigner sequence.

The civil war among the alien Atevi has ended. Tabini-aiji, powerful ruler of the Western Association, along with Cajeiri, his son and heir, has returned to the Bujavid, his seat of power. But factions that remain loyal to the opposition are still present, and the danger these rebels pose is far from over.

    Continuation of previous books

This is the continuing chapter in the series. This book could not stand alone as it continues the last book and doesn't conclude anything. It is just a set-up for the next book. It is good enough if you are reading the series like a soap opera, but it would be good if there was a beginning, middle and ending instead of just being the middle between two books.

    more from this reviewer

    Stepping stone, maybe.

As a previous reviewer mentioned, this is the 2nd book in the 4th Foreigner series. It is a continuation of the story in which Bren Cameron is Pahdi to the ruling Atevi on a planet that hosts a human colony, and a human/Atevi operated space station. Previous volumes kept the reader riveted with intrigue and suspense regarding a faction of Atevi and humans who want nothing to do with one another, and will do almost anything to ensure that the piece is anything but, which includes actually working together. This volume has Bren on a mission to the leader of the rebellious Atevi who wish to expunge the humans from Atevi society altogether. But is he really in charge, or is this Atevi merely a puppet? Action, suspense, intrigue and misconception in this cleverly, and well developed Alien world that only Cherryh could deliver.
