Overview

Baalboden has been ravaged. The brutal Commander's whereabouts are unknown. And Rachel, grief stricken over her father's death, needs Logan more than ever. With their ragged group of survivors struggling to forge a future, it's up to Logan to become the leader they need—with Rachel by his side. Under constant threat from rival Carrington's army, which is after the device that controls the Cursed One, the group decides to abandon the ruins of their home and take their chances in the Wasteland.

But soon their problems intensify tenfold: someone—possibly inside their ranks—is sabotaging the survivors, slowly killing them off. The chaos and uncertainty of each day puts unbearable strain on Rachel and Logan, and it isn't long before they feel their love splintering. Even worse, as it becomes clear that the Commander will stop at nothing to destroy them, the survivors begin to question whether the price of freedom may be too great—and whether, hunted by their enemies and the murderous traitor in their midst, they can make it out of the Wasteland alive.

In this daring sequel to Defiance, with the world they once loved forever destroyed, Rachel and Logan must decide between a life on the run and standing their ground to fight.

Praise for DEFIANCE: “DEFIANCE defies all reader expectations, giving us both a post-apocalyptic setting rife with history and a plot that’s as much about the discovery of one’s own humanity as it is about survival.”
Kirkus Reviews
Just a scant 157 residents of Baalboden remain after the devastation wrought by the dragonlike Cursed One at the end of series opener Defiance (2012). Reluctant 19-year-old leader Logan knows they will soon be beset: by the leader of city-state Rowansmark, whose prized piece of stolen, Cursed One–controlling tech Logan holds, or by the ousted Commander of Baalboden, bent on revenge--or both. Sure enough, the Commander comes knocking, and they all go fleeing in an unlikely exodus that takes them into the Wasteland. Logan's kick-ass lover, Rachel, with the help of Tree People Willow and Quinn (ersatz Native Americans in this bizarre, post-apocalyptic very-near-future), conducts weapons training along the way. But who is leaving creepy notes and murdering refugees as they go? It must--gasp--be someone among them. Logan frets, and Rachel fights grief, guilt and PTSD; only in each other's arms can they temporarily forget their current miseries. The plot trudges along with the refugees, narration shared between Rachel's and Logan's indistinguishable first-person, present-tense voices. The murder mystery fails to generate enough tension to distract readers from the slipshod worldbuilding (not a whit improved over the opener), but it does provide some opportunity for extra grieving and hand-wringing. Revelations discovered in their hoped-for haven of Lankenshire feel anticlimactic, chucked in to provoke enough angst to fuel the third book. Only the truly devoted will feel like joining the slog. (Dystopian romance. 13 & up)

4.75 Stars! Three things you should know before reading DECEPTIO

    4.75 Stars!
Three things you should know before reading DECEPTION:
    1) People die.
    2) It's an excellent sequel!
    3) More people die.

Best Case Scenario: You will love this! DECEPTION is the intense follow up to DEFIANCE, offering near non-stop action, suspense and romance as it delivers one swift blow to the feels after the other. Cinematic world-building sucks you right back into the story told from both Rachel and Logan's POV as they fight to survive another trek through the Wasteland. This time they aren't alone and not only are they fighting an invisible enemy who strikes under the shadow of darkness, Rachel and Logan are also fighting internal battles, ones with the potential to do more damage than the Cursed One and the Commander combined.

If Logan is Captain Scenario, Rachel is Queen of Denial because girlfriend does a fantastic job of pretending certain things do not bother her. But I get that, I do. Grief is a major buzzkill and really, where is the fun in dealing with stuff that makes you hurt worse than a switch to the face or threatens to leave you a hollowed out shell? (Been there. Done that. Don't care to go for a visit.) But while Rachel's busy not feeling all her feelings, Logan's trying to take care of her and lead a group of misfit refugees more concerned about who grew up on the wrong side of the trees instead of you know, SURVIVING. (I think Moses had an easier time leading the Israelites out of Egypt.)

Like most bad guys, the things we try so.very.hard to push away eventually catch up to us and when they do, we're faced with a choice. We can either allow them to destroy us or restore us making us stronger than we used to be. The same holds true for Rachel and Logan as their circumstances demand that they face their fears. Does that mean everything is all rainbows and unicorns? Of course not. In fact, if you're C.J. Redwine, it's a great opportunity to make more people pay, with.their.lives. O.O

I can't wait to see what happens next!

Worst Case Scenario: You won't like this. OR the ending will gut you like a fish Willow catches with her bare hands, the tree lover that you are will balk at the insufficient amount of Quinn-time. This is just an educated guess though, based on the primary factors of...okay, I think you get my point.

Final Verdict: Action-packed and emotionally charged, DECEPTION is an excellent sequel. DEFIANCE fans will not be disappointed!

Favorite Quote(s): "Maybe that's what love is. Giving others the power to hurt you and trusting that they'll use it to heal you instead."

We all know that sometimes the second book in a trilogy can be disappointing. It's like that awkward stage we all go through, a necessity but not all that much fun. Thankfully, Deception is NOT one of those sequels. If anything, Deception is better than Defiance. And considering how much I loved Defiance, that's saying a lot.

Deception takes the action, adventure, and romance from the first book to a whole new level. It is a non-stop ride and I loved every second of it!

p.s.- Chapter 40 is brutal. Have a box of tissue ready.

I loved this follow up to Defiance and I can't wait for the next

I loved this follow up to Defiance and I can't wait for the next book in the series. I loved being back with Rachel and Logan and loved them both as much as I remembered from Defiance. Deception is full of action, emotions, small steamy scenes, healing, friendship, betrayal, secrets and fighting against all odds. This is in no way a filler book, and I loved every second.
Revenge is a big theme in this one, and we see how it drives so many of the survivors. They all have lost people and their homes, and while continued survival and freedom are their biggest motivators, you can also see how revenge helps them to move on. But we all see how it can debilitate and add to the burdens already heavy on their shoulders when they don't funnel it properly. The same with grief. Especially through Rachel in this one. Her nightmares are chasing her into the daytime, and all of the things that she has done and regretted are piling on her shoulders and she is only stuffing it down and not dealing with it. We get to see her breaking and it was so hard to watch. Her source of comfort and her way out of the grief and guilt comes from someone that I didn't quite expect it from, but I loved it and painted such a beautiful picture of friendship and of support.
It was awesome to watch Logan grow into a leader and really take on the responsibility for the survivors. He is so thoughtful and thinks through everything. He takes seriously that the survivors chose him as their leader and I don't think they could have chosen a more smart and capable and driven person. I also loved the moments with him and Rachel. To see how in love they were, and how they supported each other. They both have so many responsibilities and try to protect the other. It is awesome and leaning on each other is how they get through it all.
Quinn and Willow are by far my favorite secondary characters. They bring so much depth to the story. Their rich back story, their sibling love and protectiveness, how devoted they are to Rachel and Logan, and the knowledge and power they bring with their friendship and alliance. I lived for each moment where they stole the scene with their fierceness or loyalty, as well as learning about their past even when it is so dark.
And wow at the twists in the plot. Oh my goodness, I didn't see some of them coming, and some of the things that took place showed such sacrifice, brought such pain, and others just made my eyes bug out because I never considered it a possibility. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book in the series and find out what happens next.

Bottom Line: Amazing story from first page to last.

Relentless plot, fascinating characters, strong world building, and a rich, raw emotional journey set against an epic backdrop. This sequel knocks it out of the park.
