Now, nearly eighteen months later and totally incapable of making even the simplest of decisions, Grant ekes out a meager existence working at an exclusive resort on the privately owned Fijian Island of Vai Kai. But there are some problems intruding upon this idyllic, decision-free existence: People are being murdered, the island is cut off by an approaching hurricane, and Grant is his own—and everyone else’s—prime suspect. During each additional uptick in the body count, Grant is suffering either from a blackout or a flashback to “That Day.” And then there’s his unfortunate propensity to be found standing over the victims’ bodies while holding the murder weapon in his blood-stained hands. One woman separates Donovan Grant from total insanity and complete resignation. But Kelly LaBrecque has her own little problem—while Grant has the opportunity in each murder, only she has the motive. Stacking up in the resort’s refrigerated food locker are the bodies of Kelly’s ex-husband and the mistress who broke apart their marriage. It’s as if Grant is knocking off anyone who ever crossed her. As the murders continue, the evidence against Grant piles up, and the latest choice of victims, the mistress’ milquetoast husband, mean Kelly herself may be next for cold storage, and Grant may be the one who places her there. Kelly and Grant must work feverishly to evaluate the clues and the ever-dwindling number of residents of Vai Kai—desperately racing the forces of nature and the killer that stalks them all. In the end, Grant will have to come face-to-face with the killer, with himself, and with the demon that has haunted his remorse-filled, guilt-laden mind for far too long.

I can not remember when I ever read a book cover to cover until last evening. I could not put it down. Every page contains twists and turns. The lead character and his fateful story grips you from the very first page. I laughed, I cried and I was on the edge of my chair all at the same time. I am a huge mystery fan, especially murder mysteries. This is one of the best books I have ever read. It ranks with the likes of Nelson DeMille and Sue Grafton.

Meet the Author

R. Doug Wicker is a graduate of Kubasaki High School in Okinawa, Japan. He attended college for two years at Clemson University before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. His stint in the Air Force began his thirty-four year-career as an air traffic controller, serving with both the U.S. Air Force and the Federal Aviation Administration. He has controlled aircraft at R.A.F. bases Lakenheath, Mildenhall, and Sculthorpe in the United Kingdom; Davis-Monthan A.F.B. in Tucson, Arizona; and El Paso International Airport in El Paso, Texas. He is a writer of both fiction and nonfiction. He enjoys thrilling his audience with tales of murder and suspense, as in the recent Kindle release of his mystery novel DECISIONS. Today, R. Doug Wicker lives in El Paso with his lovely wife Ursula whom he married in 1978. He enjoys writing, reading, travel, art, photography, gourmet cooking and fine wines, and bridge (the game, not the structure). He looks forward to further entertaining his fans for years to come with earlier works from his archive of currently unpublished works as well as his upcoming murder mystery THE GLOBE, the project on which he is currently working.

    A solid and enjoyable mystery

    I first heard about Decisions in a forum post, and thought it sounded fascinating. Being the impulsive sort, a few clicks later and it was mine.

    I'm very glad I bought it.

    To start with the positives, R. Doug Wicker weaves an interesting murder mystery. The writing is clear, I found the dialog to be interesting and well written, and the story moved at a good pace without getting bogged down too much. I enjoyed how the clues for the mystery were mentioned in passing without making a huge song and dance about them, allowing observant readers to spot them right away and people who missed them to go "oh yeah, I remember something being mentioned about that". One thing I can't stand is authors that deliberately keep clues from the reader to prolong the 'mystery' - thankfully Decisions doesn't do that.

    I don't know if long-time mystery readers would find the mystery obvious (I've only read a few mysteries in the past). I worked out a number of the elements, but didn't manage to figure out how everything all fitted together before the start of the final reveal. I thought the mystery of the story was well constructed, and it didn't leave me feeling like there were huge holes in how things had happened.

    I do have a few niggles with the book however. The main character is not particularly likable early on. He has his moments, but he comes across as unpleasant quite strongly at the start. On the plus side he gets much more likable as the story progresses, but there were still a few times I wished I could reach into the story and slap him around a bit for the way he was acting.

    Another comment I'd have about the start of the story is the main character goes on and on about the physical appearance of several women, and how terrible his situation is (both his mental state, and "oh my god there are beautiful women interested in me"). It felt like a hurdle I had to get over before the story really got going, but thankfully once that was past everything moved along smoothly.

    Despite these flaws, I think overall the book was superb and I'd happily recommend it to anyone who likes murder mysteries. I'd give it 4 and a half stars (docking half a star for the rough start), rounding up to 5 stars.
