Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger
The book begins with Thomas Jefferson addressing students and explaining the Declaration of Independence and the events surrounding the American Revolutionary War. The text goes back and forth between Jefferson's letter to the reader and explanatory blocks of text. It is difficult to see what is achieved by this back and forth approach. The information presented is standard in terms of the history and presentation. The illustrations are somewhat cartoonish, which is awkward because of the historic characters with whom children are familiar, such as Abe Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr., who appear later in the book. The use of Jefferson's letters becomes a little confusing as he "looks ahead" to these later characters and to modern times. In addition to the story, the book includes a table of contents, a glossary, an index, and references for additional study. The text would work fine as supplemental material but lacks the unique approach that would make it a "must" for the classroom or library. Reviewer: Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger
