Read an Excerpt

For as long as I can remember I have been obsessed with changing and customizing objects and surroundings. As a child, I painted my bedroom door on a regular basis and revamped any bits of furniture I could lay my hands on. This passion was fueled by witnessing the hard work and vision my parents, a photographer and stylist, applied in transforming the half-dilapidated wreck in the country where we lived into an inventive, cheerful home.

Although I have transformed some extraordinary objects over the years--a defunct computer become a light fixture springs to mind--whatever the project, I always get enormous satisfaction from working toward the end result. It is this pleasure that inspired me to write Decorating Makeovers. The projects and styling ideas in this book are for every corner of the home--and they are simple, practical, and fun. From jam jars to old furniture, upholstered chair seats to freshly painted walls, these projects are designed for everyone to tackle--the only qualifications you need are enthusiasm and imagination.

top ten tips

1. Visit yard sales and thrift shops for interesting bargains.

2. Wear a mask and goggles when cutting and sanding wood.

3. Go to ethnic clothing stores for amazing, reasonably priced fabrics.

4. Recycle.

5. Cover the area in which you are painting with a dropcloth.

6. Buy a small can of paint and paint a small area of the surface you want to paint to make sure you like the color.

7. Wear rubber gloves when dyeing fabric by hand and when using non-water-based paints.

8. If you are working with lots of paintbrushes at the same time, wrap the ones you are not using in plastic bags to preventthe paint from drying.

9. Thoroughly prepare the surface you are renovating--whether furniture, walls, or floors--before you start working on it.

10. When painting indoors, keep windows and doors open for maximum ventilation and wear a mask if necessary.
