Overview

The future of decorative knots has arrived!

JD, the producer of over 100 instructional knot videos and the creator of the famed YouTube channel “Tying It All Together,” reveals his innovative knotting style in Decorative Fusion Knots: A Step-by-Step, Illustrated Guide to Unique and Unusual Ornamental Knots.

Respected internationally for his knotting skills and clear, concise video and book presentations, JD shows how to tie knots like no others. Just as origami figurines are created through the merging of different folding techniques, JD creates new knots by combining historical knot elements and new knotting techniques. The products of this intermingling are what he calls fusion knots – a brand new genre of knot in a centuries-old tradition. It is rare for a knot book to feature even one brand new, never-before-seen knot, but Decorative Fusion Knots features more than 25 brand new knots created by the author.

Decorative Fusion Knots is the culmination of 10 years of study, practice and creation. The knots within were inspired by history, nature, mythology, and more. Many of these incredible knots have never been presented or described publicly, until now. Never before has a knot book presented a step-by-step format to tying brand new knots like this in full-color.

Alongside fusion knots, JD presents logical and comprehensive instructions for a plethora of historical knots, including Celtic knots, Chinese decorative knots, maritime knots, and popular paracord ties. Each historical knot instruction is presented in step-by-step fashion with full-color photographs. In fact, over 300 step-by-step color photographs are included in the book, each accompanied with clear, concise instructional captions.

Whether you’re a sailor, teacher, jewelry maker, survivalist, general knot enthusiast, or just looking for bush crafts, paracord ties, a curriculum for students, or a fun way to pass the time, Decorative Fusion Knots is the book for you.

With easy-to-understand captions and clear step-by-step photos, readers can learn at their own pace, review whole techniques at a single glance and simply lay the book flat on the table and follow along as they tie.

Meet the Author

Born in 1972, JD grew up in and around the Bay Area of California. During his mid-twenties he developed a fascination with rope ties and knots. Following years of reading, research and practice, he established the art of fusion knotting—a tying method that merges different knot elements and knotting techniques to create more elaborate and imaginative knot designs.

JD has gained international respect for his tying skills, and routinely travels and teaches rope and knot tying courses throughout the United States. He is the creator of more than 100 instructional videos demonstrating his knots and knotting techniques. JD’s YouTube channel, “Tying It All Together,” has amassed a dedicated following of more than 10,000 subscribers and is the most active YouTube channel for knot enthusiasts.

JD’s instructional knot videos are heralded as “the best on the web” and his contribution of new knots grows each and every month. He has additionally been acknowledged by the International Guild of Knot Tyers (IGKT), which distributes DVDs of his instructional videos as gifts to their members and other knot enthusiasts. This publication is being supported and promoted by the IGKT, an organization with members in every state across the USA.

JD lives and works in San Francisco, California, and his previous knot books, “Two Knotty Boys,” have sold in excess of 35,000 copies.

Barry Mault is the Honorary Secretary of the International Guild of Knot Tyers (IGKT), an international guild with members and branches across the US and the rest of the world. As a member of the IGKT his aim is to preserve traditional knotting techniques and promote the development of new techniques.

One of the few excellent knot & craft e-books. Great for Nook.

This book has exceptionally clear illustrations - superb for the Nook Simple Touch. This is not usual for e-books. The Ultimate Book of Decorative Knots, for instance, is not only hard to see the photos, it seizes up and is slow.
This book not only has the newer "fusion" knots of the author's devising, it has some old favorite traditional knots. J. D. Lenzen shows how to tie a Prosperity knot in hand, when before I had to use a pin board. He also helped me find a better way on the Jury Mast Knot ( by another name) and the start of the Snake Sinnet and Japanese Bow Knot and Bugle Cord Sinnet. The barrel knots are much clearer than Ashley.
I am particularly fond of the Pentaradial (fusion) as a pendant knot.
The author also refers to his website, which will give more knotting joy to those interested and access to hundreds of videos. Excellent book. Highly recommended. For those wanting specific projects, combine this with Suzen Millodot' s books in paper from Search Press. (i.e. Chinese Knots for Beaded Jewellery)
Even more valuable to me than this book with its interesting knots, was the fusion knotting concept. Instead of rote learning of famous and traditional knots, it frees up a creative view of knot work. Instead of the same old half dozen knots I learned in macrame, I now feel free to add whatever works.
