The dominated groups include Native Americans, Puerto Ricans, Mexican Americans, African Americans, and Asian Americans. Meet the Author

Joel Spring received his Ph.D. in educational policy studies from the University of Wisconsin. He is currently a Professor at Queens College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. His great-great-grandfather was the first Principal Chief of the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory and his grandfather, Joel S. Spring, was a local district chief at the time Indian Territory became Oklahoma. He currently teaches at Queens College of the City University of New York.

His major research interests are history of education, multicultural education, Native American culture, the politics of education, global education, and human rights education. He is the author of over twenty books and the most recent are How Educational Ideologies are Shaping Global Society; Education and the Rise of the Global Economy; The Universal Right to Education: Justification, Definition, and Guidelines; Globalization and Educational Rights; and Educating the Consumer Citizen: A History of the Marriage of Schools, Advertising, and Media.

    One of the Best Books I Ever Read

    A professor in my College of Education class used this book, along with 3 others, to teach about the history of education in America.

    Spring expertly illustrates the struggles that African-/Asian-/Latino-/ and Native-Americans had to endure to receive an equal education.

    He also examines how the U.S. military took over Puerto Rico, and then proceeded to force the schools there to teach in English as well as mandating that all students sing American patriotic songs each school day.

    Puerto Rican history was not allowed to be taught in the early days of the colonization process.

    "Deculturalization" illustrates how various groups' cultures have been marginalized in favor of a Eurocentic curriculum....instead of one that celebrates and reflects the true "melting pot" which comprises American culture.

    Worst book I've ever read!

    I had to read this book for a class and it was a struggle. It has no constructive purpose whatsoever.
