Let Sleeping Ghosts Lie

Twelve years ago Kate's family left the Westbrook estate on a stormy night, just after young Ashley Westbrook drowned in an icy pond. Now kate, alone in the world, has returned to the estate to tutor another spoiled Westbrook child, Patrick. The seven-year-old says he talks to Ashley by the pond. He does dangerous, deadly things because, he says, "Ashley dared me to." Just as Ashley once dared a shy, little Kate twelve years ago.

But at seventeen Kate is not so easily intimidated by "Ashley" or hostile members of her family or the forbidding housekeeper. Then Sam, the handsome stranger to whom kate is irresistibly drawn, reveals a tragic piece of the puzzle that connects him to Kate. Sam tells Kate to leave — either out of concern for her or due to a festering anger, she's not sure. But kate will not abandon Patrick to the evil that is haunting him and threatens to destroy them all.

A Great Book With Unpredictable Ending

Dark Secrets: The Deep End of Fear by Elizabeth Chandler is one of the best mystery books. I had never read a mystery book that I couldn¡¯t put down the book once I start reading it. The story sets in Westbrook estate, Wisteria, Maryland, and the main character is Kate Venerelli. Dark Secrets: The Deep End of Fear is about a young girl, Kate, has been supposedly lured into drowning incident a few years before the actual story begins. Twelve years ago Kate's family left the Westbrook estate, just after Ashley Westbrook drowned in an icy pond. Now Kate, alone in the world, has returned to the estate. Kate, the hired, full- time tutor, tutors another spoiled Westbrook child, Patrick. It gives the impression that the young girl comes back to haunt them, because Patrick seems to have some connection since Kate has been tutoring him. He does deadly, dangerous things, such as diving into a drained pool, because he says, ¡°Ashley dared me to.¡± Just as Ashley once dared Kate twelve years ago. But at seventeen, ¡°Ashley¡± or unfriendly members of her family or the forbidding housekeeper do not easily threaten Kate. Then Sam, the high school hockey team member, reveals a tragic link that connects him to Kate. Sam tells Kate to leave Westbrook estate immediately, but she will not abandon Patrick to the evil. In my opinion, this novel has a great story plot and will keep you hooked for hours. The climax or the best part of the story is when the friendly Joseph discloses himself as the indirect murderer of Ashley, and Ashley¡¯s grandfather, Adrian, is the person who hires Joseph. I think teens that like mystery books would best appreciate this book. Before reading this book, I had selected three other books, and found them dreary. Then, I had chosen this book to read for this assignment, because two of my classmates that had chosen other books from this series highly recommend it to me. I had also read the other books from the series too, after I finished this book. Compare to the other books, this book has the best story plot, but the story goes in the slowest pace of all. Therefore, I think the author needs more revision on keeping the story to flow faster.

The Deep End of Fear. Chandler, Elizabeth. New York: Simon Pulse, 2003. 311

The Deep End of Fear was a very exciting story. It has a great story to it and will keep you hooked for hours. A young girl has been supposedly lured into drowning a few years before the actual story begins. There is now a new family living in the house and it seems as though the young girl comes back to haunt them. Kate, the hired, full- time babysitter, baby-sits the youngest child, Patrick. He seems to have some connection with the hauntings of the young girl. Kate has one tough job keeping up with this child. They go through so much together and grow and have a wonderful relationship. This book is by far one of my favorites. It has an interesting story plot and can keep you hooked for hours! Once you open this book you can't shut it! It's a story that you will definitely not forget and will want to read numerous times! I would highly recommend this book. Anyone could read it but ages 12 to 15 would probably enjoy it a little more. Everyone should give this book a try!

A reviewer, March 18, 2004, The Deep End of Fear. Chandler, Elizabeth. New York: Simon Pulse, 2003. 311 pages

Katie is a girl whose friend died when she was very small. After her friend, Ashley, died her family moved away without saying anything and they didn't talk about Ashley again. This story takes place when Katie returns to her hometown and that¿s when things start getting very weird. She almost becomes an investigator. She tries to figure out what happened and its crazy what she finds out because it is stuff you would never have thought of. This book is for entertainment. It is a good book for anyone over 10. It is very suspenseful. You are always wondering what will happen next. Everyone that reads this book will really like it.
