Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Combining his extensive knowledge of geology, mining and technology with relentless action sequences and exotic locales, Du Brul's latest (after River of Ruin) is 496 pages of nonstop, over-the-top adventure. Protagonist Dr. Philip Mercer, a wealthy geologist, "sometime" consultant and field agent for the times "when the worlds of science and terror collide," is charged with overseeing the installation of a temporary nuclear waste holding tank at Nevada's infamous Area 51. But after Mercer is nearly killed by assassins while on a Vegas furlough and then inexplicably saved by the stunningly beautiful Tisa Nguyen, he learns of a secret group called the Order. Headquartered in a Tibetan monastery, the Order can supposedly predict disastrous world events using an ancient machine, but a faction of the Order with sinister plans for world domination now jeopardizes the planet's survival. As Mercer barely escapes each near-death situation, well-drawn secondary characters-like his one-legged, hard-drinking 80-year-old best friend, Harry-help ground this adrenaline-drenched tale. Though not as suave as James Bond or as scrappy as Indiana Jones, smart, resilient Mercer is a savvy adventure hero for the new millennium. (Dec.) Forecast: Browsers will gravitate to the book's fiery red and orange cover, which sports praise from Clive Cussler. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

    Threats On All Sides

From Oriental mysticism to fabled cities, from natural disasters to thermonuclear explosions, the bad guys seem to be always at least one step ahead. With an imminent threat to the vast majority of the world's population, there are those who continue to thwart anyone trying to help. Mr DuBrul's explanation of the precise series of consequences to a particular disaster leaves you chilled.

    EXCITING LISTENING

Those with a scientific bent will be especially drawn to 'Deep Fire Rising,' an adventure tale with elements of earth science and state of the art technology. Multi talented voice performer J. Charles offers a commanding reading. His 40 plus years of theatre experience stand him in good stead as he captains listeners on a harrowing course perhaps leading to Armageddon. Geologist Philip Mercer has been retained to explore and excavate caverns deep under the sea, beneath Area 51. Little does he know that as his probing continues he is drawing closer to the plans and expectations of a group of monks. It is their determination that the world will come to an end, and they will do everything in their power to see that their prediction is correct. Of course, Mercer has an attractive assistant - Tisa Nguyan. Their task is a formidable one - to prevent the world's destruction. Exciting listening!

    Great start, but then......

This book was not up to Du Brul's usual standards. It started off at a great pace and I couldn't put it down. However, about halfway through I found myself struggling to keep reading. There was no real flow and the story between Mercer and Tisa just felt forced and phony. River of Ruin and The Medusa Stone were so much better. I hope his next offering is more along those lines.

    Jack DuBrul, Here to stay.

Deep Fire Rising is Fantastic, Brilliant and Entertaining in the best ways possible! DuBrul's research is first rate and the reader can easily understand the complex theories and realities that DuBrul describes in his now famous break-neck pace and thrill-a-minute plot lines.
