Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
What are vampires? According to Drake's fun, fanciful read, they're just another group of emotionally challenged creatures in need of a good 12-step program. In the third volume of her vampire series, Drake (Seize the Dawn) introduces Ragnor Wulfson, a 1,000-year-old vampire, formerly a Viking, who is now an antiques dealer and a vampire enforcer. When Ragnor learns that his former lover Nari, the Contessa della Trieste and a naughty vampire, is throwing a masquerade ball during Venice's Carnevale festival, he travels to the city to find out what fiendish diversions she's planned. At the party, Nari and her minions feast upon the guests, but only Jordan Riley, a well-known book critic from the States, witnesses the carnage. Despite Nari's assurances that the macabre scene was part of the evening's dramatics, Jordan is convinced that what she saw was real, but the only person who believes her is Ragnor, a mysterious hulk of a man who believes she's in danger. While the two hunt down the ancient evil that appears to be stalking Jordan, they explore their mutual passion for each other. Drake's descriptions of Venice are lush, and her colorful cast of characters will engage. Those who can overlook the novel's far-fetched plot and sensational finish will be heartily entertained by this outrageous comic book romp. (Sept.) Forecast: Print advertising in USA Today and Fangoria will entice fans of TV's favorite Vampire Slayer to check out the newest installment in Drake's series. A Great Read!

I was amazed with Ms. Drakes novel. This is the first of her many books I have read. Once I finished this edition, I knew I could not be complete until I read another copy. Her characters are compelling...ie.Lucian and Ragnor. She left me wanting to know more about them and their stories. The descriptions of the landscapes and her character surroundings are amazing. Giving the reader(me) a great vision of what the lead is seeing. She gives a great version of the vampire lore...a bit of a change for me but none the less entertaining. Her flash backs are realistic and left me wanting to learn more about the supposed 'brutish' vikings and their lore. I would truly recommend this book. It left me wanting more.

    Don't waste your money

Love the books. Love the writer. Don't waste your money buying it here. The book is incomplete. You will have to buy the book in paperback to get the last couple of chapters.

The problem is the technical quality or lack thereof with the eb

The problem is the technical quality or lack thereof with the ebook. It is incomplete; 230 pages out of 275 are delivered. I can not believe Barnes and Noble would sell an item of such poor quality. Before my discovery of the missing pages there were already problems such as no punctuation, missing words, words I has to decipher such as "Ull" for "I'll". The other books in the series are very good and this one might be if I could finish it.

    Do not buy

I bought this for my nook and it was missing every other page and it was cut off at the bottom ofeach page. Seems like a good book but the format on it is terrible.

    I Also Recommend:

    Deep Midnight

This one is third in the series, but easily my favorite vampire book. I found myself wondering whether Ragnor, the main vampire character, would be the perfect man. The setting in Italy brings more splendor and mystery as the story unfolds. A wonderful read, leaving a feel good ending that makes you want to swoon in on your own victim.

    Not very deep

I went to the bookstore to buy another book, but since I didn't find it, I purchased this book instead. I should have just kept on walking. First of all, there was no romance in this book. Jordan and Ragnor just seem to annoy each other throughout the book. For the first time in years, I actually considered returning this book after reading the the first chapter, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt and read it all - I should have gone with my gut instinct.

    Not her best

I must agree that the story was similar, if not "too" related to When darkness falls. The book indeed missed the love story one would expect from Shannon Drake and I know everyone expected Jordan to turn into a vampyre at the end ,just like Jade did on the previous book.So it was totally disappointing to finish the book and not know what the heck really happened between both Jordan and Ragnor.I am however getting the next book Realm of Shadows ,because it sounds way to good already.

    Disappointed!!

This story was too similar to 'When Darkness Falls' and the love story was lacking. This is the second 'Vampire' book that I've read and I don't feel like I need to read another. Sorry, it just didn't do anything for me.

    LOVED IT!!!

I loved 'Deep Midnight'. The plot was excellent and the air of mystery and intrigue was wonderful. I have read this book countless times since I bought. Keep up the good work Shannon.

    Simply irresistible!!!

I could not put this book down, I read it in one day. Then I read it again. I love the description, it was as if I was watching a movie in my head as I read. I can't wait to read more of Shannon Drakes writing.

I couldn't put this book down!

I didn't feel this book was all that romantic, though there was some going on between two major characters. I liked the sense of mystery between Jordan and Ragnor, and all the Italian culture and language. It was very very good. It inspired me to go visit Venice.

    Exciting supernatural romance

American book critic Jordan Riley visits her cousin Jared and his wife Cindy in Venice during Carnevale. On Fat Tuesday, the trio attends a masquerade party. After dancing with a ¿wolf¿, Jordan wanders into a blood bath in which her wolf rescues her from human looking beasts with fangs.
The police refuse to investigate, scoffing at Jordan¿s account as that of a foolish inebriated American tourist. The next morning Jared insists that it was a jest in poor taste, but Jordan rejects his explanation. Unable to let go, Jordan begins her own inquiries into her mysterious rescuer and the blood bathed orgy. Her quest places her in perilous danger yet puts her on the path for a lifetime of love.
DEEP MIDNIGHT is a strong supernatural romance that continues award winning Shannon Drake¿s vampire stories (see BENEATH A RED MOON and WHEN DARKNESS FALLS). The current tale engages the audience from the start, but readers of Ms. Drake¿s previous novels will find this one, albeit well written, to follow too closely, at least at the start, of WHEN DARKNESS FALLS. Still the story line is quite entertaining due to the relationship between Jordan (a delightfully daring damsel in distress) and the ¿Wolf¿ (a phenomenally powerful protector) leading to thrills for sub-genre fans.
Harriet Klausner
