Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
Until recently, more has been known about outer space than the deep ocean. We do know that the deep ocean is dark, without sunlight, and the water pressure is lethal to humankind. So how could anything live in such an environment? Scientists have learned that a number of specially-adapted creatures do live and thrive in the deepest, inhospitable depths. What is more, new species are being discovered all the time. This book, part of the "100 Things You Should Know About" series, explores ocean zones, what each habitat is like, and how "specialized" creatures make their homes in each zone. And what remarkable creatures they are! These include fish with very sensitive eyes or a blind fish with an excellent sense of smell; creatures that anchor themselves on the sea floor and live on plankton; giant spiders and worms that live in deep mud, depending on "sea snow" for food; plus comb jellies that use what light there is to glow. Giant squid can thrive in dark, deep water since they have eyes sixteen inches in diameter—bigger than any other creature. Not all water in the deep ocean is cold. Where hydrothermal vents heat up the water to as much as 752 degrees F, critters have adapted to flourish in hot habitats. The book goes on to feature scientists who have explored ocean depths, inventions they have used, and some amazing discoveries they have made. Finally, the book discusses the challenges caused by humans, with overfishing and pollution. The large book includes a lively and colorful format, eye-catching illustrations, boxed asides that provide more facts, ideas for crafts and activities, and index. The book and series would be a welcome addition to any library. Reviewer: Judy Crowder
