Meet the Author

Peter Benchley was the bestselling author of Jaws, The Deep, and Beast, among others. He wrote screenplays for the movie versions of three of his novels and wrote, narrated, and appeared in dozens of television documentaries.
Mark Feuerstein has been on television in shows like Royal Pains, Good Morning, Miami, The West Wing, and 3 Lbs. He has been seen in such films as What Women Want, The Muse, Practical Magic, In Her Shoes, and most recently Defiance, starring Daniel Craig.

Biography

With the 1974 publication of Jaws, the story of a man-, woman-, and child-eating shark that terrorizes a seaside community, Peter Benchley left an indelible imprint on the collective American psyche. Who would ever want to go into the water again?

But there's little the reading public likes better than a good scare (remember Ira Levin's Rosemary's Baby? Or how about Thomas Harris's The Silence of the Lambs?), and with Jaws, his first novel, Benchley got all the elements just right: There was a predator; there was plenty of suspense; and, oh yes, plenty of gore, too. The book, a perfect summer beach read, was wildly successful and spent 40 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list. Benchley admitted that the book had little basis in scientific fact (at the time, almost nobody had any firsthand experience with great whites), but as a former newspaper reporter, he had impeccable instincts for a good yarn. He followed Jaws with two more terrifying deep-sea adventure novels, The Deep and The Island.

In 1982, Benchley published The Girl of the Sea of Cortez, a lovely, idyllic, and notably scare-free novel that received mixed reviews. "This reader yearned for more conflict," wrote a critic for the Los Angeles Times Book Review, "more 'and then what happened?' After a few more forays into traditional fiction, the author returned to his forté in bestselling thrillers like Beast, White Shark, and Creature.

Aware in his later years of the fragility of the species, Benchley became a staunch defender of the great white shark, penning several works of nonfiction about these endangered predators and actively advocating for ocean conservation. He died on Feburary 11, 2006, from pulmonary fibrosis, but his legacy continues with the Peter Benchley Shark Conservation Award, given annually for outstanding contributions to shark conservation.

Good To Know

Benchley was a speechwriter for Lyndon Johnson during the first two years of his administration (1967-69).

In 1999, Benchley turned his attention to writing and developing a short-lived syndicated series about plane crash survivors in the jungle, Amazon, starring Carol Alt and C. Thomas Howell.

Benchley's novels have inspired several movies and teleplays, and the author had a hand in some of them -- sometimes as an actor. He was a TV interviewer in Jaws, played bit parts in other films, and appeared onscreen as an interviewee in E!'s True Hollywood Story about the making of Jaws.

Benchley was the grandson of Robert Benchley, the famous humorist and member of the Algonquin Round Table.

    The Deep

The book The Deep is an action packed mystery thriller. The same author that wrote Jaws brings this book to life. Set in Bermuda, the book tells about how two honeymooners unravel the biggest myth/rumor around the area. This story has several composite treatises. It is about David and Gail Sanders, a honeymooning couple who like to dive. On one of their dives, they uncover something that would change their lives forever. The conflict of man vs. nature is here. On some days the couple cannot dive because of the weather. When they want to find out more about what they found, they find a local man named Treece. In a quest to destroy what they have found, man vs. man occurs. Other people try to get at the mysterious prize. This all takes place through David¿s eyes in the summer on Bermuda. Although the story line is very excellent, Peter Benchley creates his characters like a lot of other authors. They are basically the same type of characters as the classic good vs. bad novel. Treece, Gail, and David are all trying to get rid of something that could possibly be harmful, while Cloche, the antagonist, tries to obtain the item(s). Every character is completely static, all staying the exact same throughout the entire story. The conflicts are somewhat reasonable. A lot of people are killed in the book without feeling. But even so, the book was good. The story sometimes gets your adrenaline pumping. The adventurous theme is definitely there. The Deep is an adventurous book. There is a little romance and maybe one line of comedy in the whole story. If you are seeking an OK book that takes your imagination off, then I would suggest reading The Deep. If you are looking for anything else, then I would not suggest reading this book.

I came by this book by way of the movie (Nick Nolte, Robert Shaw

I came by this book by way of the movie (Nick Nolte, Robert Shaw, Jacqueline Bisset and Louis Gossett jr) when I was a kid. Where Indiana Jones got me interested in archaeology, this book/movie got me interested in underwater archaeology. It's a good thriller, well paced and fun to read. But, it's not terrifying like Jaws was. It's about a honeymooning couple who find a sunken treasure ship lying beneath another WWII supply ship full of morphine ampules. They team up with a treasure hunter in a race against a local drug lord.

    A all-around decent story

    A all-around decent story

I thought this book was better than Benchley's The Island, but a close second to his book, Jaws. The story was interesting and it had many twist and turns. Sorry, no sharks in this story, but. It had alot of action, and romance. It was an all around decent book. The couple in this book is an odd couple. The man is alot older, divorced, but she still likes him. They met scuba diving in a exotic locations. There are dangerous cults, buried treasure, and of course the deep ocean with its spooky inhabitants.

I would gladly recommend this book to my friends

    Good read Till the end

I loved this book all the way through and couldn't put it down. But the ending was very disappointing!! I was like 'is that it?' With an ending like that I kinds felt like I wasted my time reading it.
