Overview

Every culture of faithful believers has its own unique worship style, and this collection celebrates the church experience in the Celtic tradition, mixing general well-known hymns with uniquely Irish compositions -- all played on uniquely cultural instruments like tin whistles, lo whistles, uilleann pipes, Scottish highland bagpipes, hammered dulcimer, Celtic harp, Appalachian dulcimer, concertina, accordion, mandolin, and wooden flute. Several tunes are unique medleys combining a vocal and instrumental. The opening track, "Trading My Sorrows," features plaintive-voiced Bob Haligan Jr. (of Ceili Rain) before evolving into a crazed, fiddle-happy jig. Martin Chalk takes lead vocals on the folksy, mandolin-driven "The Happy Song," which moves into another jig (complete with crowd noise) called "Mrs. McCloud's Reel." "As the Deer" features pipes and harp in the well-known Enya style and features Kerri-Ann Rostad leading worship quite gracefully. Jane Billington leads "He Stilled the Storm" a bit more dramatically, with an Irish accent that gives the dreamy tune an extra resonance. More familiar tunes like "Jesu Joy/Fairest Lord Jesus" and "It Is Well With My Soul" are given playful and thoughtful Irish twists, but truly authentic Celtic pieces like "Gaelic Meadows" come across with more spiritual and emotional impact. The one piece that's guaranteed to get you up dancing for the Lord is "Reel Set," a jubilant jig which blends "The Fairest Flower," "Up the Hill," and "Shred the Bodhran." This collection is a sequel to Deep Still.
