Building on twenty years of teaching language arts, Kelly Gallagher, author of Reading Reasons, shows how students can be taught to successfully read a broad range of challenging and difficult texts with deeper levels of comprehension. In Deeper Reading, Kelly shares effective, classroom-tested strategies that enable your students to:

- move beyond a "first draft" understanding of the text into deeper levels of reading;
- consciously monitor their comprehension as they read;
- employ effective fix-it strategies when their comprehension begins to falter;
- use meaningful collaboration to achieve deeper understanding of texts;
- think metaphorically to deepen their reading comprehension;
- reach deeper levels of reflection by understanding the relevance the book holds for themselves and their peers;
- use critical thinking skills to analyze real-world issues.

Gallagher's books are top notch. Deeper Reading is filled with ready to use strategies for the secondary classroom teacher. It is a difficult task to sum up everything I learned from this book in a concise way, but when forced to pare it down, I'd say the word "active" fits best. Everything that Gallagher discusses in this book, the assertions he makes, add all the strategies and examples he provides focus on what the student can DO before, during, and after reading. It was a good reminder for me: reading is active, not passive!
Every page of this book is useful. Gallagher has spent much time perfecting methods to help students succeed with difficult texts. He sees his role as that of 'expert tour guide' leading his students through challenging literature and in the process helping them to become mature, equipped, aggressive readers. Gallaghers examples are specific, clear and practical. His positive tone and thoughtfully developed philosophy, which have clearly evolved through extensive classroom experience, uplift and inspire.
