Caution...this book is entirely from Jim Chopin's point of view. Kate is a character in this book, but Jim is the Main Character. I missed being inside of Kate's head, although Jim was terribly entertaining. A good addition to the collection, but different from the previous books.

Each book that Dana Stabenow writes, brings back floods of memories. An independent woman, I lived there most of 20 years - from Anchorage, to rural Alaska, to the oilfields at Prudhoe Bay, to the far north Arctic. I lived and worked among, and fought for the protection of, various Native cultures, traditions, and lifestyles. All her place names, descriptions of those lifestyles, of the eccentric "outside" Cheechakos who the Last Frontier attracts, and the often eccentric sourdoughs who have lived there forever...these stories have been My life as well. Her story plots are original yet often reflect true stories of this unforgiving, wild land and its myriad of peoples and personalities. Anytime I want to go "home", I read one of her stories and I'm immediately transported there.

A Deeper Sleep was my first and last Dana Stabenow book. The writing seemed strained. The dialogue did not ring true. It was also predictable.

As another reviewer said, Kate has a smaller part in this book but Jim is totally entertaining, but I missed Kate. Very enjoyable nonetheless. Good mystery. I love the cast of characters from this Alaska town. Can't wait for the next book.

Solitary by nature, Kate ignores the pleas of the ¿Aunties¿ and devotes her own time to raising her dead lover¿s son Johnny and luring state trooper Jim Cobb into a relationship with her. They both go to see the verdict on Park resident Louis Dean for murder.------------------------- The jury acquits him in the death of his wife even though Louis has a habit of killing his wives and assaulting and raping females. Yet he has never been convicted. A few weeks later a woman and her child are murdered and their gold nugget collection stolen. Kate¿s ward Johnny identifies Louis as the killer. The DA refuses to prosecute so he walks once more leaving the residents of the park angry enough to murder him themselves. ------------------------ There are a lot of fun scenes in which Jim feels that he is going down for the count and Kate is getting ready to rope him in. These scenes are needed as counterpoint to the odious actions of a sexual predator and killer who has his henchmen try to kill Johnny and end up injuring Kate¿s beloved mutt. This Alaskan tale is part mystery, part police procedural and part action thriller.----------------------------------------- Harriet Klausner

Overview
In A Deeper Sleep, her first novel since Blindfold Game, the stand-alone political thriller that made Dana Stabenow a New York Times bestseller, Stabenow returns to the popular and award-winning Kate Shugak series. Kate, a private investigator, has been working on a case for the Anchorage District Attorney involving the murder of a young woman by her husband, a man named Louis Deem. Deem has been the subject of investigations before, and he's never been convicted of a crime. But Kate and her on-again, off-again lover, state trooper Jim Chopin, who arrested Deem, are convinced that this time it's different, and he'll finally be punished for his actions. When the jury returns a verdict of ...
