Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leah Hanson
On New Year's Eve 1984, a twenty-one year old drummer lost his left arm in a freak car accident. That drummer was Rick Allen of the band Def Leppard, and as he recovered in the hospital, he and his band mates wondered what would become of the band. They had already released three albums, toured the world, and were fan favorites on the new music video channel MTV. Would this accident mean the end of it all? Lead singer Joe Elliott thought, "who ever heard of a one-armed drummer?" Beginning with a gripping retelling of this tragedy, the author plunges readers into an unauthorized biography of Def Leppard chronicling the arc of this rock band's rise to fame. From humble beginnings in Sheffield, England, five working class teenagers came together bound by their passion for rock and formed the band Def Leppard. Although at first the band gained more popularity in the United States than their native England, they would go on to make fifteen albums, tour the world countless times, and give us rock anthems such as "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and "Love Bites." Allen's car accident would prove to be just one of many challenges the band faced, including the death of guitarist Steve Clark, but as guitarist Rick Savage says, ". . . the story continues, and that in itself is a triumph." Carefully researched and meticulously referenced, Jeffrey's contribution to the "Rebels of Rock" series brings the members of Def Leppard to life in Behind the Music fashion. Reviewer: Leah Hanson
