    Book Review

Defeating Terrorism is an in depth look at terrorism, consisting of various articles that are brought together by two U.S. Army Officers. Colonel Russell D. Howard, a former special operations officer and current professor at the U.S. military Academy, and Major Reid L. Sawyer, a former army intelligence officer and current director of terrorism at West Point, bring together several potential strategies as well as the difficulties of defeating terrorism. Defeating Terrorism is actually a collection of 11essays written by respected authorities that contribute their own specific knowledge to further explore terrorism. Many of the essays are taken from U.S. military conferences, while some where specifically written for this book. It is a blend of essay¿s that look into several factors including economic and social reasons for and tactics against terrorism. One of the pluses of Defeating Terrorism is that there are various opinions on certain subjects such as the effectiveness of U.S. action in defeating Al-Queda, in which the first essay by Dr. Rohan Gunarantna maintains that even though we had some successes against Al-Queda, we have not destroyed the central command thus leaving Al-Queda as a still powerful threat to the United States. James S. Robbins essay ¿Defeating Networked Terrorism,¿ contradicts Gunarantna¿s claims and says that the fight to destroy Al-Queda is far from over, although Al-Queda could not sustain an offensive agenda thus only surviving to fight in a defensive position. Howard and Sawyer include three separate essays that explore Economics role in combating terrorism. ¿The Financial Front in the Global War on Terrorism,¿ is the first essay in which economics is a focal point. Buckley and Meese discuss strategies to freeze and track terrorists finances in an effort to disrupt and defeat terrorism. The next essay involved with finances, is one written by Robert Mandel, which explores the possibility of hiring privatized security organizations and private counterterrorism firms to fight terrorist organizations and collect intelligence for us.
