Overview

In this fourth novel in Lisa Black’s captivating suspense series, forensic investigator Theresa MacLean finds herself embroiled in a case in which high-powered defense attorneys start turning up dead.

When Marie Corrigan, a Cleveland defense attorney with a history of falsifying evidence, is found dead at the Ritz-Carlton, most would agree that she had it coming. Before entering the crime scene, Theresa knows she’s walking into a forensic nightmare—for hotels are teeming with trace evidence. But what she finds is even worse than she imagined.

Then two more bodies show up in quick succession, and Theresa’s investigation takes on a whole new urgency as authorities suspect they have a serial killer on their hands. But as she searches for the connection between the victims, Theresa begins to fear that both she and her daughter are closer to danger than they realize. And a mother will stop at nothing to protect the life of her child.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Someone appears to be taking "kill all the lawyers" literally in Black's contrived fourth suspense novel to feature Cleveland forensic investigator Theresa MacLean (after 2010's Trail of Blood). At a convention of criminal defense lawyers at the Ritz-Carlton, the trussed naked body of beautiful, bright, detested lawyer Marie Corrigan turns up in the supposedly unoccupied Presidential Suite. Theresa's daughter, Rachel, who's working at the hotel for the summer, notifies her mother about the death. Homicide detectives John Powell and Neil Kelly as well as Theresa's cousin Frank Patrick investigate the many suspects, including attendees and hotel workers. When two other lawyers are killed, connections appear between the first victim and the Ritz-Carlton's head of security, Marcus Dean; young restaurant staffer William Rosedale; and fellow lawyer Dennis Britton. As Theresa does the painstaking forensic analysis the job demands, she worries about Rachel's attraction to William and his involvement in a sealed juvenile case. A dependence on coincidences weakens the plot, but the detailed forensics will keep genre fans turning the pages. (Sept.)
From the Publisher

"Lisa Black writes with authority...[Narrator Kristen] Potter's reading is smooth and hypnotic, making it hard to stop listening." - AudioFile Magazine
"There are many forensic experts. There are many writers. Rarely, however, do the two meld as seamlessly and synergistically as Lisa Black." - Sacramento Book Review
"She is, quite simply, one of the best storytellers around." - Tess Gerritsen

    more from this reviewer

fans will appreciate Lisa Black's latest forensic locked hotel room tale.

At the Ritz Carleton in Cleveland, someone kills infamous defense attorney Marie Corrigan while a legal convention is hosted at the hotel. The police at the murder scene agree immediately on two things. First the unethical lawyer who falsified evidence got what she deserves and that anyone in the city who came into contact with the sleaze would have a motive for murder; homicide detective John Powell tells forensic investigator Theresa MacLean, whose daughter Rachel works at the Ritz, that they have a hotel filled with suspects.

Theresa knows a hotel room is impossible to cope with as previous occupants will leave behind traces that make it impossible to seek oddities. The immediate positioning of the corpse implies a lovers' rendezvous that turned ugly. However, Theresa refuses to jump to any conclusion as the killer could have set up the crime scene accordingly. The case turns serial when two more corpses posed as if they were with a lover are found. Seeking the links between the three victims for a common avenging killer, Theresa soon fears she and Rachel could be on the death list.

Readers will enjoy the latest MacLean forensic investigation (see Takeover and Trail of Blood) as Sarah Palin would agree no one messes with a grizzly mama especially if one of their cubs are endangered. The story line is fast-paced with much of the fun being the simplicity of the murders as everyone including the protagonist and readers seek complexities. Although avenging serial killers is a frequent theme and the protagonist has dealt with these predators (see Evidence of Murder), fans will appreciate Lisa Black's latest forensic locked hotel room tale.

    A Thrilling Read

This was an action-packed, non-stop drama that kept me riveted to the pages. The suspenseful plot had me guessing and I was surprised at the outcome when all was revealed. Theresa is a strong woman and it shows in her dedication to her work and to her family. I look forward to reading the next book in this gripping and thrilling series.

You must check out all of Lisa Black's books. She is such a wonderful author.

I have read four of Lisa Black's books and thoroughly enjoyed each and every one. They all hold you spellbound. The blot begins to build and you are trying to figure out who did it even when you have put the book down. It's so great to read such interesting, clean, decent, wonderful books where you can read the entire book and never have to skip pages because of fifthly dirty actions or words. Hope to see more of her work in the very near future. Edith Britt

I enjoyed all 284 pages. This book is better than Takeover as it drug on a bit; you were caught from the start. You are left hanging about Dennis, and what about Ray. GJRA

    Too Many Words

Story was interesting but too much detail - don't think I'd try another Lisa Black novel. Not fond of her style.
