MacKinnon’s Rangers

Major Connor MacKinnon despises his commander, Lord William Wentworth, beyond all other men. Ordered to rescue Wentworth’s niece after the Shawnee take her captive, he expects Lady Sarah Woodville to be every bit as contemptible as her uncle. Instead, he finds a brave and beautiful lass in desperate peril. But the only way to free Sarah is for Connor to defeat the Shawnee warrior who kidnapped her—and claim her himself.

Torn by tragedy from her sheltered life in London, Lady Sarah is unprepared for the harshness of the frontier—or for the attraction she feels toward Connor. When they reach civilization, however, it is she who must protect him. For if her uncle knew all that Connor had done to save her, he would surely kill him.

But the flames of passion, once kindled, are difficult to deny. As desire transforms into love, Connor will have to defy an empire to keep Sarah at his side.

I have to be honest, I have finished this book a few weeks back

I have to be honest, I have finished this book a few weeks back but procrastinated on writing the review. I feared that no amount of words would explain my feelings about this book. I know this to be true, so, I will keep it simple. This book is EPIC and I LOVED it!!!

Connor is the third, youngest and the last Mackinnon brother to work for Lord William Wentworth during the French/British and Indian war. Still under Wentworth’s blackmail, Connor and his close friend Joseph were sent on a mission. They were to rescue Lady Sarah from the Swanee Indians and if needed by all means necessary. Despite Connor’s hate for Wentworth, his loyalty to his brothers and the rangers has him following orders. And as it goes; everything happens for a reason…he meets Sarah, the very uptight Lady who will change his life forever.

Sarah, has inadvertently caused a scandal for her family and herself. As a last resort, she is headed to see her uncle William for advice. But on her long journey, she is taken for the pure reason of retribution. Sadly, it is one of the unavoidable tragedies of any war.
Connor and Sarah's coming together were not at the most romantic but despite the terrible consequence their love for each other just came through for them.

The love, devotion and hard work that were put in to this book shows with every page that was written. The research and the knowledge of the time setting are detailed and well incorporated into the story. But what drew me in is the empathy I felt while I read this book. I practically TRAVELED BACK IN TIME! I saw their surroundings in detail. I saw what the characters were doing and felt their emotions as if I were there. I remember Sarah’s fear and pain when the Indians captured her. I even felt the pain and understood the reasons of the Swanee’s hatred. Connors bravery and love for Sarah was sigh inducing. Joseph friendship and the Ranger/MacKinnon brothers' camaraderie were definitely awe inspiring. Wenworths dichotomy of hate and love towards the brothers…well, now that, is exactly what I felt for him. I hated him with a passion and loved him for what he truly is, deep, deep, deep inside. Though this is the third of the trilogy, I am hopeful that this is not the last we see of the MacKinnons. I certainly would like to know more of Lord Wentworth and Joseph.

Alright folks, I think that it is time to clear the air, set the record straight & come out of the closet. I’ve been hiding too long and I can’t deny my true feelings any longer....I don’t like Historical Romance. I know, I know, it’s horrible and I know you’re asking yourself “WTH is she doing reviewing this book if she doesn’t like Historicals?” My answer is two words - PAMELA CLARE!! She was able to make this hard-core Contemporary/Erotica/PNR genre fan fall so in love with a Historical, that I placed it on my 2012 Favorite Reads list. After reading Defiant, I can now say that I no longer dislike Historicals....as long as the author is Pamela ;)

Defiant is third story in the MacKinnon’s Rangers series and one of the most beautiful & touching love stories that I’ve ever had the pleasure to read. Connor & Lady Sarah’s love is fierce, hungry, compassionate, understanding & all consuming. Connor never imagined falling for the niece of the man he hates the most in this world. Sarah never imagined having to go through the horrors that she experienced in the wild. Together, they are the balm that each needs to quiet the pain & hurt of their pasts.

Pamela Clare is a master at story-telling and sucked me in from the first page. Her imagery & stunning prose drew me back in time to the 1700’s and I didn’t want to come back. My usual turn off’s to Historicals were immediately quieted and instead helped me visualize myself in Lady Sarah’s shoes. The heartache and pain that she suffered living during a time where her wants & wishes were ignored, being considered second class just because she was female, the fear of being married to someone who only saw her as a means to gain more coin & never knowing anything beyond what her parents thought acceptable. I was propelled into the story and I became Sarah. I felt her every emotion - despair, joy, pain, bewilderment, wonder, lust, love & resignation. She had a quiet strength but that did not diminish its power and made me respect & admire her all the more.

Connor was just extraordinary. What started with his need to protect & save, quickly became his salvation. He fell for the one person he could never have, protected her & saw to her every need and want with a compassion that was rivaled by none. He showed Sarah all the beauty that his love could give her, even knowing that he would not get to keep her with him. His struggle with his need for revenge, the all consuming love he felt for Sarah, the despair he felt having to give Sarah up and his fierce need to protect had me bawling like a baby and is what truly made this story magic for me.

I will not go into plot, storyline or give away any spoilers to ruin the experience for you. This is one of those books that makes you want to hurry to the next page to find out what happens next but then makes you beg for it never to end.

I was lucky enough to read an early copy of DEFIANT. I've been waiting, not quite so patiently, for Connor's book for years. I've wondered who the heroine would be that could tame Connor's self directed anger and bring out the man that he wanted to be.
Historically accurate as always, Pamela Clare paints a world involving the feared Rangers, their allied Indians and the colonists who are struggling to create a life out of the harsh wilderness. We meet Sarah, niece to William Wentworth (Connor's most hated foe) who fled England in scandal, only to be kidnapped by a war party bent to take their revenge out on her. Connor is sent to rescue her, but in doing so he's forced into a union that he never dreamed possible.
This book fits right in with SURRENDER and UNTAMED in telling the compelling story of the MacKinnon brothers.

First off, let me say that this book is incredible. Amazing. Wonderful. Gut wrenching. Insanely good. Pamela sent it to me a few months ago to read, and I just loved it. The story is beyond anything I could have imagined, because she is SO good with history and painting a beautiful image on a hardcore backdrop. A love story during the French and Indian War? YES. That happened. This is the third, to date. And it is brilliant.

To say I'm in love with these books would be mild. The characters are so rich and passionate, every one of them. She fleshes out every man in the book, not merely the hero and his heroine. The secondary characters, by right of being fully realized, add SO MUCH to the overall story that you feel a PART of it. It is a very intense reading experience. One that is difficult to duplicate, and really I haven't seen from very many authors.

This is a beautiful and amazing book.

    REVIEW:
OH….MY….GOD! Och, she did it again! Quite simply, Ms. Clare is one of THE greatest authors I have ever had the pleasure of reading. She is such an inspiration to readers and aspiring authors alike. I read her stories and find that I can’t put them down and then days later, am still thinking on her characters. She manages to pull action, drama and romance all together in one very perfect and intriguing package.

I was waiting for Connor and Ms. Clare didn’t disappoint. He was dashing and so very sexy in this piece. I love how Ms. Clare brought things around full circle and found myself falling in love not only with Connor but also Joseph. (MS. Clare, PLEASE give us Joseph’s story!)

I couldn’t put this book down and stayed up almost all night because it was just THAT good. I recommend this for anyone, whether you are a historical buff or not, quite simply because if you aren’t, she’ll turn you to be. Five out of five stars for an AMAZING job!

Pamela Clare has done an amazing job bringing history to life in this 3rd installment of the MacKinnon's Rangers stories. The hero and heroine, Connor and Lady Sarah are beautiful together as we journey with them through the wilds of upstate NY during the final months of the French and Indian War. We see the sacrifices and hardships they must endure as two people who would never have met in any social circles, forge a relationship and a love that can only be described as amazing.
Old debts are paid and the series protagonist, Lord William Wentworth, reveals a side to him that we've only hoped existed before. Readers of this series won't be disappointed and after having read this, I can only hope that we'll have more books to look forward from Pamela about some of the other characters who have been such an integral part of this story line. No doubt about it...read this book!

Another MUST read by Pamela Clare!!! Every time Pamela's has a new release I say "There is no way she can get any better!!" I have waited for ever for Connor's story and the wait was worth every minute. Sarah was a strong, courageous woman that left me asking myself "Would I be that brave?" If I had lived in that time and faced such circumstances.
Connor **SIGH** What can you say about him that can even begin to describe him? Are there really words that can? All the MacKinnon brothers are amazing men and Connor lived up to his name well. I've always loved Connor and sometimes when I have loved a secondary character so much I get disappointed when their story comes. I knew this would not be the case in this book. Connor lived up to every expectation I had and more. I can't wait for Joseph's book and anything else Pamela puts out. Huge thanks to Pamela for her amazing writing ability!!

    Wonderful, passionate, romantic story.

Defiant is the third book in the MacKinnon’s Rangers series and one of the most beautiful, amazing, heartbreaking, joyous, poignant, exciting, perfectly wonderful romance novels I’ve ever read. No, I take it back, that's not what it is... calling it a romance novel doesn’t do it justice. What it is, is a true love story, in every way imaginable. I adored Iain and Annie’s story, and Morgan and Amalie’s, but Connor and Sarah… my absolute favorite of the three. It's such an adventure! An incredible journey from letting go of the past to embracing the here and now, and the future. Connor and Sarah have so many things to overcome, and I don’t just mean Indians, murder, kidnapping, annoying relatives and gossip and rumors… I mean, yeah, those things are there, but nothing compared to what they had to overcome within themselves… their own personal demons… anger, betrayal, hopelessness, a need for revenge so consuming it can destroy one’s soul… such a powerful story. I could go on and on and on telling you how much I love every single word of this book, but I won't do that, I won't deprive you the pleasure of experiencing the story for yourself and discovering all the amazing little gems that make Defiant one of my very favorite historical love stories ever.
