Overview

Keith Urban's fourth album, Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing, was released days after he entered a treatment center to treat his alcoholism. The album debuted in the top spot in the Billboard country charts, scored four hit singles, and eventually went double platinum. What's so remarkable about this is that Urban's rehabilitation regimen didn't allow him to tour for months after the disc's release, a move that could've hurt sales. It didn't happen. Urban's now trademark meld of country, pop, and rock & roll connects deeply with fans, and they are nothing if not loyal. Defying Gravity is his fifth studio release, and in many ways it simultaneously builds on its predecessor while standing apart from it completely. Certainly, there are similarities in sound and approach: Urban once again worked with Dan Huff to co-produce the set, and his signature manner of layering everything from strings and drum machines to banjos, pedal steel, crisp drums, and taut, sheeny electric guitars is a sound that belongs to him alone. The other similarity is that this album is unapologetically one of redemption tomes colored as love songs in various shades and tempos -- though none of them are heartbreak songs. He co-wrote eight of Defying Gravity's 11 tracks, and arranged all of them. That said, Capitol throws everything into the ring this time out by issuing a pair of leadoff singles in the tight little rocker "Kiss a Girl" and the shimmering, reverb-laden guitar workout "Sweet Thing," which is disguised as a midtempo power ballad. Both are 21st century equivalents of rock & roll love songs that echo everyone from Tom Petty to Greg Kihn, and even a bit of Dwight Twilley -- though this is clearly not conscious. As radio tracks, they are smart picks, especially with the clever guitar and banjo interplay -- Urban has transformed the role of the backwoods and in-the-hills instrument into a respectable part of the rock & roll toolbox. There are some proper ballads on the disc as well, such as the haunting, nocturnal, and dreamily textured "The Summer Comes Around," his nakedly emotional paean to wife Nicole Kidman ("Thank You") that closes the set, and the shuffling "Only You Can Love Me This Way." The skittering drum loop that undergirds the guitar and Rolling Stones-esque "doo-doo" chorus in "I'm In" makes it an excellent choice for a fourth single, and the clipped pedal steel, distorted electric guitars that careen in the bridge, and shuffling percussion make the finger-popping "Why It Feels So Long" feel like a contemporary country take on of one of Bruce Springsteen's boulevard songs, or John Mellencamp's "Cherry Bomb." In sum, Defying Gravity builds on the skill set that gave listeners Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing and takes it further, seamlessly combining hook-laden crafty songwriting with a pop sensibility in the modern country vernacular that blazes a new trail, underscoring Duke Ellington's dictum that there are only two kinds of music: good and bad. This is a shining case in point for the former.

Urban is way back on message. He's taken such an aggressive header into the fluffy clouds of romantic optimism, in fact, that he should have just mailed Van Morrison a couple bucks and called this thing Love, Love & Crazy Love.

Talk about a terrific album!!! Ever since the release date on March 31, I haven't stopped listening! Urban is well-known for his hopeful, feel-good songs, such as the hit "Somebody Like You" ; this album is wholly comprised of such songs- how fitting for the current times! Much like his previous albums, this one is inadvertently designed for the optimistic realist; hope, joy, and fantastic music. I highly recommend this album.

I became a fan of Keith Urban about a year ago and have to say that this CD is fantastic. It shows how truly talented he is in all his songs. Keith manages to pull out every emotion humanly possible when listening to this CD. Kiss a girl has become my favorite on this CD and truth be known I actually played it over and over again for 30 minutes on my way to a radio station I work with. I just can't get enough of Keith Urban. His opening 2009 concert at Mohegan Sun was incredible, just as this Defying Gravity CD is. You won't be dissapointed with this purchase.

This is the best of all of Keith's albums. I have them all and I love them all. But there isn't one song on this one that I am even tempted to skip over. I don't tire of listening to Keith's voice or his guitar -- there is so much to listen to on this album. My favorite is If Ever I Could Love with Till Summer Comes Around a close second. Tied for 3rd are I'm In and Hit The Ground Running. My Heart Is Open keeps playing in my head even when the music is off. I can only imagine what it must be like to be loved like the emotion expressed in Thank You. Why's It Feel So Long is so funny - Keith was inspired to write it when he just had to call Nicole after she'd just barely cleared the driveway on her way out of town. Kiss A Girl and Sweet Thing are fun and sassy - like Keith can be. Only You Can Love Me This Way I heard live at the Fillmore and it's great. Standing Right In Front Of You is just a nice listenable song. I highly recommend this album to anyone - regardless of which genre of music you prefer. Keith's fans cross all boundaries. If you have a chance to see him perform these songs live - don't pass it up. It's something you will remember always. In a nutshell - buy the album, it's fantastic!!! Oh, and if you are wondering how did I hear it when it isn't going to drop until the 31st - www.keithurban.net fanclub preorder.

Fantastic album, can't stop listening to it. He's really got that great blend of rock and country. I highly recommend checking out 'I'm In' and 'Sweet Thing'. But the best song is 'Thank You' that he wrote for Nicole Kidman about helping him through his alcohol addiction. I guarantee you'll cry. But the whole album is great - can't wait to see him in concert!

I have been listening to Keith's Defying Gravity CD for two days straight at work, and the more I listen to it the more I love it! I have been a fan of Keith's since 1997. I have every CD that he has ever put out, even the one he did in Australia. If you really love songs that are about love, then this CD is perfect. There are some ballad type songs, and then there are the ones that make you want to get up and dance. My favorite song is Hit the Ground Running. It is upbeat and just makes you smile everytime you listen to it! I hope you go and get the CD, and enjoy!!!

This is one of the best albums Keith Urban has recorded and will be a huge hit with both country AND Pop music. This singer, songwriter, guitarist (unparalled) has co-produced an album that will make you smile and feel GOOD in spite of dark times in our country right now. Very inspiring. I love it and so will anyone else who buys it or even listens to the songs on the radio.

Keith's new album is the best cure for whatever ails you! It has such wonderful upbeat songs that have that great interwined sound that you'll love whether you listen to country, rock or pop. If you don't want to listen to upbeat songs all the time, you'll love the slower songs-the haunting Til Summer Comes Around, or the incredibly touching Thank You. It's an album you'll always just want to play all the way through, all the time! Buy this, buy it now!

If you are a Keith Urban Fan, you must add "Defying Gravity" to your collection! I pre-ordered my CD and received my copy in the mail last Thursday. It was perfect timing because I had a chance to listen to it quite a few times before heading up to the Keith Urban VIP Show at the House of Blue in Los Angeles. The HOB Show was AWESOME!!! I absolutely LOVE "Kiss A Girl", "Sweet Thing", "Til Summer Comes Around" and "I'm In". "Thank You" is a beautiful tribute to his wife, Nicole. Keith, you are an amazing artist! Keep on ROCKIN'!!!! WE LOVE YOU!!!!

This is so far, my favorite Keith Urban album. It is AMAZING! I can't pick my favorite song, because they are all great. The lyrics all tell amazing stories, and the CD is phenomenal!

I can't stop listening to this cd. It is so upbeat and positive. We all need that in our lives now. It is not as country as his earlier cds and certainly more pop-like than his last (which was great in my opinion). It is definite cross-over material headed straight to number 1.

Keith really touched me through his other albums but this one is the best he sings like he feels and what other people are going through like he is singing just for you.
