Overview

Genre: Erotic Contemporary

When struggling waitress Melody Dylan gives a handsome, lonely stranger a simple gift she has no clue her life is about to take a drastic turn.

The stranger ends up being Clay Powers, a famous UFC heavyweight fighter. Clay's large build and dangerous fists have always intimidated. People in his hometown keep their distance and Clay is fine with that. Everything changes when a new waitress at the local diner buys him a piece of pie on Thanksgiving. Touched by the gesture when it's obvious she can barely afford to survive, her warm smile and lush body churn up powerful feelings that leave Clay wanting more from her than pie.

Melody is running from her past and the small, country town of Garnet is the perfect hiding place. With an ex-husband after her and scars from her abusive marriage etched deep, the last thing she expects is to fall for a man who makes a living with his fists, but she can't resist Clay or the tender connection they share.

Finding love in the most unlikely of places, the passion is undeniable, but Clay and Melody know their haunted pasts and unpredictable futures leave the odds stacked against them.

    A MUST READ

I started and could not put it down. This was the firsdt book I've read by this author and I cannot wait to read the second. This is one author I'll read over and over, and this book was a definite reread, little to no mistakes, and I have to say finding a book with this few mistakes is a blessing. I LOVED this book, and if you love a little romance and suspense then you'll love this. When a man is protecting a woman from her past, then you know its going to be good.

I am apparently late to the party in reading this book, but I am SO happy that I finally got around to it. This was my first book by author Kele Moon and it will not be my last. In fact I now can't wait for the next book in the Battered Hearts Series. It's a short story (just over 250 pages) and to tell you the truth, that made me sad. I wanted the story to go on.

Sometimes you just need a sweet romance story, but this one also had some spicy kick to it. The sex wasn't over done, was completely story appropriate, and was certainly hot. The rest was adorable and sweet. I mean who doesn't love the idea of a big tough MMA Fighter with a soft warm heart and romantic words. Clay, our hero, says some beautiful things that just made my heart go pitter-patter.

This really is a romance story. A beautiful romance story. If you are a romance reader you'll love this one.

    Happily Suprised

I'm usually put off by the millionaire men and the broke women stories...but this was a good read that I enjoyed. I'm looking forward to her next book in this series. I tried to read her other book but it was just too far out there for me.

Great way to be introduced to a new author!

At least she's new to me :-). I love authors like Lora Leigh, Nalini Singh, Maya Banks, Jayne Ann Krentz, etc so I'm a little picky about who I spend my money on. Defying the Odds exceeded my expectations. I loved that Clay was a little bit socially awkward and unsure while still being Alpha and that Melody is sweet and funny and relatable. The first scene is an awesome glimpse into the rest of the way the book is set up. I'm really looking forward to the next book about Jules and Romeo, it's gonna be a wild ride.

Loved it! Don't pass over it.

Absolutely wonderful. Well written romance with just the right amount of hot steamy sex. Not just sex but an actual love making between two characters that draw you in. Some tender moments that just steal your heart. Of course a hot hot hot mma fighter to make it sizzle. 1st time reading this author. Will definately read more from her.

    Boring & Predictable

I was hoping this book would have some storyline that was more than what was on the cover of the book, some substance to the characters, but it couldn't of been more predictable. It was hard to get through the book.

Melody Dylan is searching for a second chance. She has recently escaped an abusive relationship and now she is making a new start in a new town. Overwhelmed by the generosity of strangers, she really feels Garnet is the town for her. A simple act of giving someone pie on Thanksgiving changes her life forever.

Clay Powers is a famous Ultimate Fighting Champ. He has grown up his entire life in the town of Garnet and even though he’s famous, he’s just a home town boy at heart. Taken back by the kindness of a waitress, Clay takes an immediate interest in Melody. Her smile seems to captivate him...among other things.

This is a perfect love story. Watching two emotionally wounded people find love and happiness in each other...what better way to spend your afternoon. I loved watching the connection grow and build between them. The protectiveness and selflessness of Clay was amazing, he really did wear his heart right out in the open. The passion was volatile and the scenes hot and steamy. Defying the Odds was a wonderful book to warm your heart on a cold winters’ day.

This copy of Defying the Odds was given to me by Random House Publishing Group - Bantam in exchange for an honest review. Publish Date Dec. 20, 2011.

    Ok...bad grammar.

I am usually not too picky when it comes to novels such as this genre but I had a hard time reading the characters all too frequently saying "ain't" , " 'cause" and "becha". Even though the love story part of it was sweet...I felt like the quality of it was downgraded because of the grammar and I cringed each time I read those words. Had the author done otherwise this would have been a great read.

The book is the first in the Battered Hearts series; the book has some scenes that maybe a bit much for some readers. But otherwise I found the book an interesting read about finding passion and love in the most unlikely places for the most unlikely people.
The book was hidden in the mess books that I have on my Kindle app (have inquired about adding a folder options for this since I get confused easily). And yes, as I was reading the book I noticed that I read the second book first and then the first, out of order. With that being said thanks Amazon and Kindle app for confusing this reader!

Melody is trying to make a new life for herself in Garnet, a small country town. A hard worker with a heart of gold, Melody wants to leave her past behind but she fears that the damage has been done and that she will never find love in her life. That is until she meets Clay. A UFC fighter who is physically intimidating, Clay is not what he seems. He is sweet and kind to Melody, behavior she is not used to getting from a man.

Both Clay and Melody were interesting characters, but I could not connect to them at first because their stories were told later in the book. I understood where Melody was coming from but the details of her past weren't revealed until further ahead in the book and by that time I had already formed an opinion of her. And although I enjoyed Clay, I would have liked him even more if I had known his story from the beginning. As it stands, I like them enough to see them happy, but not enough to be invested in their relationship.

I will be honest with you and tell you that this book was hard for me to get through simply because the relationship between Clay and Melody did not feel real to me. The connection was there as well as the chemistry, but everything happened too fast for me. I would have liked to see more interactions between them before they ended up having sex. Now, I'm not saying that the sex wasn't good, because it was excellent, but I can't help but think that it would have been a better read for me if they had gotten to know each other better and communicated more.

The writing was good with emotions thrown in the mix and enough humor to keep it light. I enjoyed the chemistry between Clay and Melody, especially the sex scenes that took place later on in the story after I had gotten to know them better. Kele Moon brought to the page a strong yet conflicted hero in Clay. I appreciated the many layers of him that were revealed to me in the story, which helped me see him as much more than just a sexy man. The secondary characters were a nice addition to the story and each one contributed an integral part to it. I especially enjoyed the camaraderie between Wyatt, Jules and Clay.

This is the first book I've read from Kele Moon and it won't be the last. Defying the Odds is a sexy read with interesting characters and enough emotional undertones to make it a good read for me. I'm looking forward to reading Jules' story, Star Crossed, which is the next book in the Battered Hearts series.
