Overview

When struggling waitress Melody Dylan gives a handsome, lonely stranger a simple gift she has no clue her life is about to take a drastic turn.

The stranger ends up being Clay Powers, a famous UFC heavyweight fighter. Clay's large build and dangerous fists have always intimidated. People in his hometown keep their distance and Clay is fine with that. Everything changes when a new waitress at the local diner buys him a piece of pie on Thanksgiving. Touched by the gesture when it's obvious she can barely afford to survive, her warm smile and lush body churn up powerful feelings that leave Clay wanting more from her than pie.

Melody is running from her past and the small, country town of Garnet is the perfect hiding place. With an ex-husband after her and scars from her abusive marriage etched deep, the last thing she expects is to fall for a man who makes a living with his fists, but she can't resist Clay or the tender connection they share.

Finding love in the most unlikely of places, the passion is undeniable, but Clay and Melody know their haunted pasts and unpredictable futures leave the odds stacked against them.

Meet the Author

A freckle faced, redhead born and raised in Hawaii, Kele Moon has always been a bit of a sore thumb and has come to enjoy the novelty of it. She thrives off pushing the envelope and finding ways to make the impossible work in her story telling. With a mad passion for romance, she adores the art of falling in love. The only rules she believes in is that, in love there are no rules and true love knows no bounds.

So obsessed is she with the beauty of romance and the novelty of creating it she's lost in her own wonder world most of the time. Thankfully she married her own dark, handsome, brooding hero who had infinite patience for her airy ways and attempts to keep her grounded. When she leaves her keys in the refrigerator or her cell phone in the oven he's usually there to save her from herself. The two of them now reside in Florida with their three beautiful children who make their lives both fun and challenging in equal parts-They wouldn't have it any other way.

I started and could not put it down. This was the firsdt book I've read by this author and I cannot wait to read the second. This is one author I'll read over and over, and this book was a definite reread, little to no mistakes, and I have to say finding a book with this few mistakes is a blessing. I LOVED this book, and if you love a little romance and suspense then you'll love this. When a man is protecting a woman from her past, then you know its going to be good.

Absolutely wonderful. Well written romance with just the right amount of hot steamy sex. Not just sex but an actual love making between two characters that draw you in. Some tender moments that just steal your heart. Of course a hot hot hot mma fighter to make it sizzle. 1st time reading this author. Will definately read more from her.

I am apparently late to the party in reading this book, but I am SO happy that I finally got around to it. This was my first book by author Kele Moon and it will not be my last. In fact I now can't wait for the next book in the Battered Hearts Series. It's a short story (just over 250 pages) and to tell you the truth, that made me sad. I wanted the story to go on.  Sometimes you just need a sweet romance story, but this one also had some spicy kick to it. The sex wasn't over done, was completely story appropriate, and was certainly hot. The rest was adorable and sweet. I mean who doesn't love the idea of a big tough MMA Fighter with a soft warm heart and romantic words. Clay, our hero, says some beautiful things that just made my heart go pitter-patter. This really is a romance story. A beautiful romance story. If you are a romance reader you'll love this one.

At least she's new to me :-). I love authors like Lora Leigh, Nalini Singh, Maya Banks, Jayne Ann Krentz, etc so I'm a little picky about who I spend my money on. Defying the Odds exceeded my expectations. I loved that Clay was a little bit socially awkward and unsure while still being Alpha and that Melody is sweet and funny and relatable. The first scene is an awesome glimpse into the rest of the way the book is set up. I'm really looking forward to the next book about Jules and Romeo, it's gonna be a wild ride.

Melody Dylan is searching for a second chance. She has recently escaped an abusive relationship and now she is making a new start in a new town. Overwhelmed by the generosity of strangers, she really feels Garnet is the town for her. A simple act of giving someone pie on Thanksgiving changes her life forever. Clay Powers is a famous Ultimate Fighting Champ. He has grown up his entire life in the town of Garnet and even though he’s famous, he’s just a home town boy at heart. Taken back by the kindness of a waitress, Clay takes an immediate interest in Melody. Her smile seems to captivate him...among other things. This is a perfect love story. Watching two emotionally wounded people find love and happiness in each other...what better way to spend your afternoon. I loved watching the connection grow and build between them. The protectiveness and selflessness of Clay was amazing, he really did wear his heart right out in the open. The passion was volatile and the scenes hot and steamy. Defying the Odds was a wonderful book to warm your heart on a cold winters’ day. This copy of Defying the Odds was given to me by Random House Publishing Group - Bantam in exchange for an honest review. Publish Date Dec. 20, 2011.

I'm usually put off by the millionaire men and the broke women stories...but this was a good read that I enjoyed. I'm looking forward to her next book in this series. I tried to read her other book but it was just too far out there for me.

Melody is a new waitress in town. She escaped an abusive marriage and chose to start over in the small town or Garnet. Garnet isn’t known for much except for being the home of Ultimate Fighting Champion, Clay “Powerhouse” Powers. When Melody sees what she thinks is a lonely man sitting in the diner on Thanksgiving, she buys him a slice of pumpkin pie because she knows what it is like to be alone. Clay hates pumpkin pie, but he tries to swallow it down so as not to embarrass the pretty new waitress. The two have an intense mutual attraction to each other, but Mel is broken and Clay has never given his heart to anyone. However, they find in each other what each one needs, even though they both have baggage. When Mel tries to break things off before Clay’s big fight, his attention is on anything but winning. His best friend Wyatt (the town sheriff) and Wyatt’s sister, Jules, conspire to take Melody to Las Vegas for Clay’s Championship fight. They want to use her as leverage to get him to pay attention and WIN! He sees her and ultimately wins the fight. But, trouble ends up finding them and things take a dangerous turn. I love the banter between Melody and Clay. She may have been through hell, but she is as much of a fighter as he is, starting over a new life with nothing to her name. Clay may be a big, strong, scary, fighter, but he turns into a sweet and sappy boy who only wants to protect the woman he loves. And boy does he love Mel. The sex scenes are steamy, the romantic stuff is sweet, and there is even some suspense at the end to round out this wonderful book. *A copy was provided for review.

It was a "sweet" book with a gentle giant hero and lost damsel in distress. Some of the language was a little ... uneducated. I found myself skipping over some quotes and character speaking because it was a little too much of "ain't go no" that I really couldn't stand.

I love these two. The secondary characters are great also.

This book is Clay and Melody's story and is a great start to one of my favorite series. I've read it and the rest several times and will continue to do so. For a first book in a series, the world is so richly created you feel like you could walk right in to Hal's diner and order a meal. Current MMA heavy-weight Champion Clay "Powerhouse" Powers, the sheriff of Garnet Wyatt Conner, and Wyatt's twin sister Jules have been friends since middle school. The three own the Cuthouse Cellar Training Center. The thrown away foster kid, Clay comes across as big, rough, tough, and not the friendliest person. Melody is the sweet new waitress at Hal's diner that is trying to start over after fleeing from her abusive ex-husband. No one thinks that the big bruiser of a MMA fighter and the jumpy little waitress are a good match, but the two see something in each other that no one else ever has. Will they prove everyone wrong by Defying the Odds? You'll have to read it to find out!
