Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Windows running too slow, or too unreliably? Don’t buy a new PC. Just “de-gunk” the one you’ve got. This book shows you how.

What’s gunking up your computer? Temp files that fill your hard drive with crud. Programs that run at start-up without asking permission. Spyware you never even knew you installed. Programs you never use. Stray icons. Web favorites that no longer work. Spam. And lots more. One step at a time, this book helps you clean it all out. And while you’re at it, you’ll organize your files so you can actually find stuff.

Degunking Windows won’t just make your PC faster. It’ll make it less aggravating, too. Bill Camarda

    My windows are sparkling again!

What an utter blessing it was to find Degunking Windows on the bookshelf; I suddenly love doing windows again. I am not a techy or computer guru. I am one of millions of Americans referred to as ¿the average home computer user¿. The thousand page tech books aren¿t for me, too much jargon to maneuver through. I need something that falls between heady paperweight and picture book. Degunking windows fits the bill. I use my Dell with Windows XP for all of my college course work, as well as for working on my family tree and listening to music online. Another words I put a lot photos, word documents and music files on my pc. I also spend a lot of time online doing research which has just plagued my computer with cookies, email, and Spam. My $2,000.00 computer developed a split personality and became very moody. It was definitely not the agreeable and efficient machine that I fell in love with a year ago. It had grown sluggish, prone to freezing up, and came close to crashing several times. A frightening thought when I have so much information stored there. Something had to be done, and it had to be done fast before either, the machine, or I had a melt down. That¿s when it happened. I found Degunking Windows and put away the aspirins. Thank you Joli Ballew and Jeff Duntemann for publishing a book that never made me feel stupid and for not calling me a ¿Dummy¿. It¿s a well organized but detailed solution for problems that most of our computers have. It¿s an invaluable and easy to use resource. I wish my college texts were this organized. I loved the degunking quick reference in the front. I didn¿t have to meander through the whole text for solutions, the summaries and references got me the information I needed. Then when I had more time I could resort back to the book for additional steps to degunking. I was amazed at how easy it was to clean up my PC without spending hundreds of dollars on new software or hardware. Who needs to call tech support? I¿ve got Degunking Windows sitting right next to my computer.

    Informative and Fun

The first thing about this book that will catch your eye is the cover. Looking like a 1960s housewife, the woman seems to be terrified about what to do to fix her malfunctioning computer. And the theme of this book seems to be exactly about getting rid of all the 'excess junk' that computers seems to acquire, just like a house that accumulates way too much stuff. Throughout the book, there are lots of suggestions on ways to get rid of things that 'gunk up' (I love that term) your computer from programs you don't need or haven't used in ages to email in and out boxes filled with old emails, to desktop icons that can be deleted, and so on. There are also suggestions for more complex problems like cleaning your registry, optimizing your hard drive and even ways of improving the security on your computer. Each chapter starts off with a checklist of major topics that chapter covers and what I really liked about each chapter was the authors' informal approach, taking potentially very technical sounding subjects and presenting them in language that anyone can understand, along with providing step by step instructions of specific 'degunking tasks.' Some PC 'fixit books' have lots of useful information but tend to get 'too techy,' whereas I found this one to be informative and enjoyable at the same time.

    Degunking Windows...Our Salvation!

Between my mother and I, we have always been aware of how important it is to 'clean out' our computers but never knew how to go about it. She has spent several hundered dollars over the last 2-3 years from taking her computer to an 'expert' to do it for her. Degunking Windows has a 12 step program that we tackled immediately and wha-la! It is unbelievable! If we ran into a specific problem, i.e, large email files that take forever to download, we could look it up in our Degunking Windows index and get to the source of the problem. We now have all of our files organized so we are recommending this book to everyone. We feel like we can actually sit down and enjoy our emails again, as well as surfing the net. Degunking is a great habit to get into, and we are thrilled with this user-friendly book! And look at the money it saved us!! Thanks so much!!

    Common sense advice

Many Microsoft users have noticed how over time, their spiffy new machines seem to get slower and slower. But the sheer complexity of the operating system defies many users' abilities to understand or fix this. Therefore the authors wrote this book. To help those who are not systems administrators or gurus. They specialise to the XP operating systems, but point out that the tips given here typically also apply to earlier Microsoft operating systems, like NT, 98 and 2000. The most useful hint is really the lowest tech of all. Manually rummage through and delete files that you no longer need. Granted, it's dangerous to do this in an arbitrary system directory. But under normal usage, users tend to put files into only a few standard directories. The authors recommend you spend some time there to remove the unneeded stuff. Basically just general housekeeping. But like real housekeeping, many of us just put this off. Of course the book has other hints, and these are more technical. If the above hint sounds like it might be useful, then consider getting this book for the others.
