Esta le habla de su hija, una estudiante de periodismo que está en medio de un interesante proyecto: está entrevistando a los familiares de las víctimas de un asesino en serie, El Buen Pastor. Quiere que Gurney hable con Kim, que la asesore y la ayude un poco, y le pide su permiso para que lo llame. Gurney accede y Kim le llama para ponerlo al día de su trabajo. Según ella, una productora de televisión está interesada en su proyecto y lo han dotado de presupuesto y medios para que lo pueda llevar a cabo. Le pide a Gurney una entrevista para consultarle unas dudas y, a partir de este momento, Gurney acaba más involucrado de lo que en principio preveía. Cuando Gurney hace una inspección de la casa de Kim en busca de intrusos, acaba cayéndose en el sótano, a causa de un escalón roto de la escalera. Cuando está en el suelo escucha un susurro: Deja en paz al diablo. Descubre más tarde que este mensaje forma parte de un cuento que el padre de Kim le contaba de pequeña y además concuerda con el mensaje bíblico-apocalíptico del Buen Pastor.
