As the popularity of emo and punk-pop plateaued, many bands had a lot to prove to stay in the game. As of 2003, Brand New had sidestepped any notion that they'd be stuck in the prototypical mold found on Your Favorite Weapon. Unlike their debut, Deja Entendu isn't all about bitter breakups and doesn't fall into a permanent punk-pop hole. Produced by Steven Haigler (Pixies, Quicksand), this sophomore effort finds Brand New maturing, reaching for textures and song structures instead of clichés. They still, however, alternate their full-on blasts with slower acoustic work, which doesn't hurt. Many antiromantic lyrics such as "my tongue is the only muscle on my body that works harder than my heart" saturate the disc, but there's still some resentment with downers such as "I hope you come down with something they can't diagnose and don't have a cure for." "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" is one of the stronger tracks and isn't so much a fresh entry as it is a rewrite of their semihit "Jude Law and a Semester Abroad." It's not quite déjà vu; it's just consistent.

Editorial Reviews

New York Times - Kelefa Sanneh
An extraordinary album full of riddles and rallying cries and contagious choruses.
Rolling Stone - Jenny Eliscu
Deja Entendu has more than its share of irresistible singalongs.
Spin Magazine
A fresh, literate blast of nuanced screamers and mid-tempo heart purging. (A-)

brand new's second cd is drastically different than their first, and it is absolutely incredible to hear their growth. while "your favorite weapon" is a very good pop-punk album, it lacks the depth and meaning of "deja entendu". i can honestly say that this cd is a huge part of who i am. the music and lyrics are so perfect - genuine and heartfelt. jesse lacey's poetry is put to well composed music for an effect that will awe and inspire you.

This CD is ssooo amazing! I can't even put into words how awesome it is. It has powerful lyrics and melodies, and it's just...wow. My friend introduced me to them and I have been hooked on them ever since! My favorite songs are "Okay,I Believe You But My Tommy Gun Don't" and "The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot". I highly, highly recommend this CD. If you don't have it...get it! You won't regret it!

brand new's sophomore album, while a a slight disappointment to lovers of their song "jude law and a semester abroad", is honestly a masterpiece. although it's hard to think of today's music as anything more than a teenage cliche, if you put all feelings of resentment towards dashboard away this album will carry you day after day. from jesse lacey's proclamation to "die young and save yourself." to his confession on the fact that he doesn't have it all quite figured out. to his final declaration that he "need(s) you like water in my lungs." deja entendu is an amazing cd that will stir emotion in you each and every time you start up "tautou." i've owned two copies of this cd after my first copy was no longer audible from being played so many times. if there is any doubt in your mind about buying this cd. please take my word and purchase it. and on a side note brand new beats taking back sunday any day. hands down.

This is one of my favorite cds and it becomes a favorite of whomever i lend it to. I bought it after hearing Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades for the first time but my favorite song on it is Okay, I believe you but my Tommy Gun Don't. All in all, just an amazing cd.

This album rocks. It's perfect(or very nearly). It's just a little short. It's way different than YFW, but not in a bad way. No, it's just really, really good. Some things you have to think about. Some things you just kind of get. There's a little story in each of the songs, and it gives you a little peek into Jesse Lacey's world. Guarnteed to make you a really big Brand New fan. They rock. Some advice before I go away. GO to see them in concert. They'll blow you away!

This is such a good CD!! I'm hooked on Sic Transit Gloria. I love that song! I don't watch a lot of TV, so I never saw or heard of Brand New. It's actually weird how I first heard of them. I was watching the Yellowcard: Ocean Avenue music vid at LAUNCH:Yahoo.com and when it finished they started playing Sic Transit Gloria. The details in this music video and Ocean Avenue were kinda the same, like he was running, and he was wearing a suit and there was also a black door with the white lamb on it, so I got curious. That sounds stupid, but I'm so glad that my friggin' curiosity paid off. I don't regret buying this CD. It's truly amazing.

Wow. This album is so amazing, with "Your Favorite Weapon" and now "Deja Entendu" Brand New has been one of my favorite bands. All the songs are just extrordinary and every second of this album is pure genious. They are all my favorite songs but "Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades" is more so the one that would stand out to me in picking my favorite song. There are three things you should do if you don't have this album and do it now: Buy. This. Album.

...couldn't keep me from this disc! The most staggering, clever and beautifully cynical set of songs to be mislabeled "emo" of the last half decade. The choruses, starkly different from the verses, mainly come from left field, then swoop, bounce and thump the listener into an addicted frenzy! No other current MTV darlings draw me in and floor me like these guys- truly a cut above!

Deja Entendu, and Brand New's first cd, Your Favorite Weapon, are completely different cds, yet I absolutely cannot get enough of them. Although Deja Entendu has a more mature tone than Your Favorite Weapon, it is much more original. I like it much better than Your Favorite Weapon.Brand New is a way amazing band and this definitely is a cd you need in your collection. As silly as it sounds, I cannot imagine my life without this cd.

It's a whole new language, folks, and I don't just mean the title! I am firm and solid in my opinion that Brand New's "Deja Entendu" is the best album I have ever listened to, in it's structure, it's lyrics and it's sound, most especially the bass. This album is such a jump up (maturity wise) from "Your Favorite Weapon", as much as I enjoyed that one as well. Their vocal ranges are absolutely amazing, and their lyrics are ORIGINAL and PROFOUND. Never before has a band made me think so deeply. I'm a writer, and have been inspired for some of my better pieces from this album. Don't call yourself a fan of good music until you've picked up this CD! And I mean that whether or not you actually expected the new track to blow out your headphones to be a 5-minute bass-dominant ballad about borderline rape of a teenage guy.

With the release of their first album "Your Favorite Weapon" Brand New merely fit in along with other Pop Punk acts of the time. With the release of their second album "deja Entendu" Brand New completely abandoned the sound that brought them semi-fame, but this was definately the right move. This CD is absolutely phenomenal. Tracks Such as "Its okay I believe you, but my tommy gun dont", "Sic Tansit Gloria...Glory Fades" and "The Quiet Things that no one ever knows" are the highlight tracks. but that is not to say that there are any lowlights. This album is near perfect front to back. I refuse to go 2 days without listening to it. Jesse Lacey's lyrics are so poetic it would bring E.E. Cummings to the brink of tears. This album is a must buy. Trust me.

OK, brand new is my favorite band and I heard of them before they came out with deja entendu. I first bought Your Favorite Weapon which is a great cd. However, this one is even better. There is not one bad song and I defenitely reccomend checking them out live. Best song on the cd: Okay I believe You, But My Tommy Gun Dont. BUT all of them are great, buy it now. DO IT.

Brand New's first album, Your Favorite Weapon was amazing, but definately not as good as their sophomore effort Deja Entendu. This CD has great lyrics and great sound, much different than YFW, and much different than anything you've ever heard. They are really evolving well, so make sure you pick this cd up, you won't be disappointed.

Before "Deja Entendu" i was never really into the "alternative" genre. Somebody told me to listen to "nirvana, Nevermind"....to get into the genre....I listened to it and liked it a lot, but it did'nt hit the spot, like this..Yeah that's right im comparing this album to one of the best ever. If it were'nt for this album i probaly would'nt like music as much as i do now, It's pure brilliance. And it will never get old

i liked brand new alot when i heard 'your favorite weapon'. great band, catchy lyrics. new sound. i kind of saw them as taking back sundays sister band. they were alot alike."is that what you call tact? you're as subtle as a brick in the small of my back" if you never noticed, those lines are in both seventy times seven and theres no i in team. anyway. I bought Deja Entendu.. and honestly im just in awe. I've had the CD on repeat for the past 4 days since ive bought it. non-stop. its just incredible. they are the only ones who could pull off what they do. the bass is amazing. the guitar is catchy. the drums are a great addition. the lyrics are incredible ive never seen so many literary devices and content in a song. and that is every song. every single damn song is better than 99.999999999% of songs ive heard. not one let down. amazing. perfection. buy it.

For any fan of previous albums of Brand New's, this album only improves. For anyone who likes the broad genre of what I suppose could be called emo but isn't quite. The sound is both calm and frenzied, starting slowly but building up. The album doesn't seem finished, but hopefully we will see some sort of conclusion in a next album. I hope. Try it. You'll like it.

Brand New's second album is just as awesome as the first and it manages to create a whole new sound for the band. The songs have GREAT lyrics and are definitely addictive. Brand New is original and fun...These guys rock!
