Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
The information in this book, which is part of the "Celebrate the States" series, is presented in an interesting and accessible manner for young students and the illustrations are extremely well chosen. Several of the nature photographs, as well as the two-page spread of Henry Lea Tatnall's painting, A View of the Brandywine exhibit the beauty found in this small state. Delaware is situated on the Atlantic Coastal Plain in the northeastern section of the Delmarva Peninsula, offering miles of sandy beaches for vacationers. Delaware is also known as the First State because it was first to ratify the Constitution of the United States. The industry and economy of the state are recapped along with the history of the duPont family and their chemical plant where nylon was developed in 1938. There are many sidebars throughout and a listing of additional pertinent and fun facts appear in the back of the book. Suggestions for further study includes books, web sites, and a videotape. 2000, Benchmark Books/Marshall Cavendish, Ages 9 to 14, $35.64. Reviewer: Carolyn Mott Ford
