Children's Literature - K. Meghan Robertson
Did you know that Delaware's highest point is actually "lower than the lowest places in many American states"? Did you know that Delaware has 381 miles of shoreline? Did you know that Delaware's state flower is the peach blossom because it was the state's top crop until a virus in the 1890s devastated production? Did you know that the du Pont family produced up to half of the gunpowder used by the North during the Civil War and later formed the DuPont Company, which led the state and nation in chemical inventions? These are just a few of the many interesting facts about Delaware that can be found in this addition to the "Celebrate the States" series. This book, along with the others in the series, would be a great reference for elementary school libraries. It provides all of the main information about the state, including but not limited to state history, prominent figures, government, population, and economy. Maps of the state are shown in different ways, e.g. by land and water boundaries, population density, county, agriculture, manufacturing, natural resources, and places to see. The book even includes a few songs important to Delaware, a (delicious) recipe for peach crisp and terrific images. A "State Survey" at the end gives an overview of the state, detailing the seal, capital, motto, nickname, bird, flower, tree, fish, bug, mineral, colors, geography, timeline, economy, calendar of celebrations, famous Delawareans, parks, museums, monuments, and fun facts.
