Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Mark R Hutchinson, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is the fourth edition of the classic reference in orthopedic sports medicine originally published in 1994 and previously updated in 2003 and 2010.
Purpose: The current editors begin their preface by congratulating readers on owning the most up-to-date, comprehensive treatise on sports medicine in the world. I concur. Their acknowledgement of Jesse DeLee and David Drez as the original master surgeons and architects of the book is sincere. The field has blossomed since the 1994 edition and the editors of this edition have done an admirable job of taking on the challenge and creating this update that still accomplishes everything readers have grown to expect from DeLee and Drez.
Audience: The purpose is to update the go-to reference for orthopedic sports medicine. All orthopedic surgeons who practice sports medicine, all fellows in sports medicine, and all residents will find it a trusted and primary reference on the subject. As with most references, the ultimate quality depends on careful oversight by talented editors and this edition has two of the best educators in Miller and Thompson. The list of contributing authors is equally impressive.
Features: This two-volume set covers the gamut of orthopedic sports injuries from head to toe. It also does a nice job of addressing the broad definition of sports medicine beyond the musculoskeletal system, to include general medical issues, team physician issues, and special populations. The code for the Expert Consult website allows access to the online version wherever the reader has Internet access.
Assessment: This has long been established as the go-to reference for orthopedic sports medicine. Every library should own it and every resident and fellow should have access to it. The editors have done a wonderful job of keeping the book current. I am sure it will remain the first stop for residents, fellows, and colleagues when they are seeking information on orthopedic sports medicine.
