Overview

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. In Aletia DuPree's case, the former owner of the North Georgia landmark, BJ's Restaurant it's delicious Southern recipes. After being forced to close her restaurant of twenty-one years in 2008 due to a devastating fire that was simultaneous with the crumbling economy, she soon embarked on a longtime dream to write a Southern cookbook. She used the restaurant's most beloved recipes and a collection of family favorites along with treasured recipes from around the South to write Deliciously Southern: Southern Recipes and a Tour of the South.

Deliciously Southern captures the very heart of Southern cooking as it takes the readers on a journey into the kitchens and dining rooms of some of the best cooks found in Texas, Tennessee, the Carolinas and Georgia, with more than 370 recipes. While some dishes, such as Southern Fried Chicken, Vivian's Skillet Candied Sweet Potatoes and Southern Banana Pudding are reminiscent of Sunday Dinner at Grandma's house; others, such as Shrimp and Grits, Potato Cakes with Caramelized Onions and Bananas Foster come from some of the finest restaurants in the country. The easy to read cookbook also features popular dishes such as: Loaded Baked Potato Soup, Strawberry Walnut Spinach Salad with Poppy Seed Dressing, Baked Macaroni and Cheese, Grits and Greens and Old-Fashioned Chicken Pot Pie. And of course, a Southern cookbook would not be complete without a tantalizing selection of glorious desserts including: Southern Pecan Pie, Grandmother Priest's Blackberry Cobbler, Hummingbird Cake and Southern Red Velvet Cake. To wash it all down, Aletia has included refreshing recipes for classic Southern Sweet Iced Tea, Fresh Peach Punch or cool off those hot summer days with a cold glass of Old-fashioned Lemonade.

Woven throughout the book, Aletia shares helpful cooking tips that read like notes from a friend; personal heartwarming stories of growing up in the South, family gatherings, church suppers, and old fashioned-Sunday dinners.

Passionate about her Southern roots and the people of home, Aletia DuPree's Deliciously Southern celebrates all that is Southern: rich culture, deep traditions, incredible food and unmistakably warm hospitality.
