Overview

Ninety-five days, and then I’ll be safe.

I wonder whether the procedure will hurt.

I want to get it over with.

It’s hard to be patient.

It’s hard not to be afraid while I’m still uncured, though so far the deliria hasn’t touched me yet.

Still, I worry.

They say that in the old days, love drove people to madness.

The deadliest of all deadly things: It kills you both when you have it and when you don’t.

Lauren Oliver astonished readers with her stunning debut, Before I Fall. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly called it “raw, emotional, and, at times, beautiful. An end as brave as it is heartbreaking.” Her much-awaited second novel fulfills her promise as an exceptionally talented and versatile writer.

Editorial Reviews

ALA Booklist
Praise for Before I Fall:“Oliver, in a pitch-perfect teen voice, explores the power we have to affect the people around us in this intensely believable first novel...This is a compelling book with a powerful message and should not be missed.”
Booklist
“Oliver’s follow-up to her smash debut, Before I Fall (2010), is another deft blend of realism and fantasy...the book never loses its A Clockwork Orange-style bite regarding safety versus choice.”
New York Journal of Books
“Oliver’s deeply emotional and incredibly well-honed prose commands the readers’ attention and captures their hearts. With a pulse-pounding tempo and unforeseen twists and turns, Lauren Oliver has opened the door on a fantastic new series; the second book can’t come soon enough.”
The Horn Book
“In a thick climate of fear, Oliver spins out a suspenseful story of awakening and resistance with true love at its core.”

Delirium + Lauren Oliver = AMAZING!

I love this book. Right now this is my favorite book of all times. I just loved it! I finished it in two days and absolutely loved it. It was very emotional book. I laughed, smiled, and cried once at the end. But I loved it. Lauren Oliver is also my favorite writer of all times! I love this book!

    Good Concept. Poorly Executed.

When i read the back cover i immediately thought the story had a very interesting concept that got my attention. Kind of like a cross between Ally Condies "Matched" and Scott Westerfelds "Uglies". Gave it a good enough shot. Got to about chapter seven, and was NOT feeling the author at all. No disrespect to her, but she rambled on and on way too much. I started skimming a lot of the pages and eventually just said I'm done. It wasn't going anywhere. There's a good kind of rambling, like in the hunger games, that makes a point and has things to do with the story. And then there's nonsensical rambling that just makes me tired of reading, like jane eyre. I gave it enough time for it to get good but there wasn't enough dialogue. If you still wanna try it, maybe you like that kind of stuff, definitely read a good lil bit before you go and buy it.

    Very descriptive of everything but......

This book is set during an entirely different time in the US, so in order to understand it Oliver had to be very descriptive. I was extremely content with the way she described the settings, but when it came to the people I thought she was a little dull. Please do not get me wrong, I loved this book and im just trying to make it better. I was just hoping that I ,as a reader, would feel more emotion when something bad would happen to them, or that my heart would skip a beat and i wouldn't stop giggling when they where finally together. But when they were together most of the time its just a summary in her thoughts. For example if they went to the beach the book would say......I arrived at the beach. And Alex and I raced to the buoy.

Instead of saying..I arrived at the beach to find Alex there on his beach towel waiting for me his gorgeous auburn eyes sparkling. When he say me, my heart pounded as he ran toward me to scoop me up in his arms.
"I'll race you to the buoy, beautiful" Alex whispered in my ear as he set me back down on the ground.

I don't know maybe that wasn't how she wrote it because they were always some needed distance between the two of them because of their society. But i was just hoping I would FEEL the attraction between the two of them. Who knows? Maybe it will be better in the second one. Which by the way I will definitely be picking up:)

    Excellent Story

It's a love story at the core but unlike most romance novels which boringly revolve just around the couple and their drama - this explores ethics, politics and political resistance, freedom, justice and so much more. It faintly reminded me of 1984 by George Orwell.

WARNING: Extremely addictive - and Incredible!

I simply could not put this book down. I discovered Lauren Oliver not that long ago and she is one of my new favorite authors. This book incredible. I read it in three days, but it would have been one if I didn't have to sleep and go to work. It will draw you in and you won't want it to end. It's so fantastic; I was actually out of breath when I got to the end. You MUST READ THIS BOOK.

What to say about Delirium... Well, I thought it was an amazing book and it kept me interested and wanting more. When I first saw it, I was very reluctant to read it because it was another book about a dystopia. I felt like there were too many of those out there and that it would be exactly like Matched or the Hunger Games. Turns out, it was kind of similar to Matched, but I thought the whole love is a disease thing was way more interesting. This was probably also one of the few books that have actually made me cry. Usually, during sad parts in a book, I feel like crying. Reading the ending of Delirium, I wanted to burst into tears and crawl into a hole. I'm probably just being incredibly dramatic, but it was THAT good. I also liked the characters and loved seeing Alex and Lena together. They are so perfect together.
I highly recommend this book even if you despise cliffhanger endings. I hate them, but I still enjoyed the book. So go READ IT!

This book is SO good! The concept is so original and Laren Oliver presents in such an intriguing way that right as it finishes you want to buy the next one! Without giving too much awa, it is basically about a girl living in a future United States in which love is a disease and anyone over the age of 18 needs to be "cured" of it. It is her journey living in this world learning what a life without love would be like. If you like original concepts and books like The Hunger Games, Twilight, or Harry Potter you will love this book! So so good!

    Good Read

Good book but not Great. I loved Lauren's first book and that's why I decided to read this one. However, I struggled through the first part of the book. I almost lost interest but decided to keep reading. I think it came together about halfway through and I didn't want to put the book down. So I am giving this book a 4. Her book following Delirium is much better. I didn't want to put that one down.

Delirium by Lauren Oliver ¿¿¿¿¿ Lena was counting down the days

    Delirium by Lauren Oliver
    ¿¿¿¿¿
Lena was counting down the days until she could get the cure for the “disease.” Love was considered a disease called Deliria, and the government eradicated it with a procedure they created. Lena believed that Deliria was bad and couldn’t wait for her birthday so she would be safe, but, before she could get the cure, the unimaginable happened: she fell in love, which changed everything.

I have the Deliria; I loved this book. I can’t imagine a world without love. I’m a hopeless romantic, so that seems unthinkable. For a book about the nonexistence of love, it was a beautiful, heartbreaking love story. The author’s words touched my heart and had me holding onto each word like a treasure wanting more.

I was easily pulled into the story. It was an especially connective read for me when I discovered it was set in Portland, Maine. I live in the Portland area, and I know it very well. I recognized most of the streets that were in the story and could picture the scene, which was pretty fascinating. I’ve never read a book where I’ve known the area that it was set in, especially a specific spot. I’m very curious about why the author chose Portland, Maine. I really enjoyed reading about a dystopian version of Portland.

Some things you should know about me before we get started: I am

Some things you should know about me before we get started: I am a huge fan of dystopian worlds and science fiction, so I guess I had pretty high hopes for Delirium. Also, after checking it out on Amazon (looking at the ratings and non-spoiler reviews, obviously), it only made me want to read it more.

When I finally got hold of it (sounds a bit like Shatter Me and I, hey?)… Well, you can say that I practically devoured the whole book. Paired with the beautiful cover and the amazing back blurb, I just couldn’t put it off even though I had to finish another book I was reading at that time as well.

Anyway, all I can say about this book is that it was incredible. Lauren Oliver managed to suck me into this dystopian world where love is considered a disease, and where every human who reaches the age of eighteen must go through this procedure, where you are ‘cured’ from love. Meaning, you won’t be able to fall in love. Ever. Sounds pretty horrible, right? It is.

Let me say that I admire Oliver for making her MC so different from the others. In most books, main characters are the ones who are the rebels. The ones who defy the government and society. The ones who are different. But Lena, the main character, was different, and I enjoyed the change. With the help of both Hana and Alex (her best friend and love interest, respectively), Lena grew into something more. She became braver and bolder.

Another thing I liked was the romance. The romance in this book took its time, which is the way real love works: slow and steady. Oliver made sure we saw that Lena and Alex’s love for each other was developed properly, unlike some other books, where the love between the MCs happened too quickly to be realistic enough.

This is what real love is, writers and readers.

Delirium’s plot was original. Its romance believable. The story action packed and able to keep me at the edge of my seat.

Now I really can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel. 5 stars.

Oh wow, this was MOST EXCELLENT! The main character is Lena who

Oh wow, this was MOST EXCELLENT! The main character is Lena who is counting down the days until she receives "the procedure". At the age of 18, or earlier in some cases for those showing signs of deliria, everyone goes through a procedure which cures them of the disease. The disease? Love. Lena has read horrifying stories of those that "died because of lost love or never found," which frightens her the most. Her mother had fallen ill with the disease after her husband died and was not able to be cured, which worries Lena. She reads about these stories in The Book of Shhh (The Safety, Health, and Happiness Handbook) which is widely consulted among citizens and lists symptoms of the disease, the dangers of it, and such. It was interesting to read snippets of it at the start of each chapter.

The world Lena lives in is pretty restricted with curfews for the uncured, random neighborhood patrols, raids, keeping a certain distance away from the opposite gendered uncured, and staying within the boundaries of the city. Beyond the city and into the woods, Invalids live within "The Wilds". Invalids are those that choose not to be cured and don't seem to be living in the safest conditions.

Lena wasn't exactly likeable since she was trying so hard to be practical and conformant at first, but you could relate to her and I grew to love her throughout the story. I also loved her free-spirited friend, Hana and a guy she later meets - Alex. Looooved Alex! He was... he was... I'll just insert **SWOON** here! Loved this story and I'm definitely going to be reading Hana (Delirium #1.5) next and then Pandemonium (Delirium #2) soon!

    Fantastic!

I had such a hard time providing evidence for why love isn't a disease. The arguements agaist love and the world Lena lives in is amazingly thought out and the scenes between her and her mother made me cry. This is such a beautiful and emotional story. I can't wait for pandemonium.

    Oh my goodness yes!

I was totally blindsided by the book! I figured It would be good- Lauren Oliver is great, but I didn't plan on this! The ending had me crying and yelling at the same time! This book is definitely for more mature readers, but when you pick it up, it immediately just sucks you into Lena's world.
Her mother was killed for loving ( and immune to the cure), and Lena cannot wait to receive the operation that emotionally numbs you. Until, of course, she meets Alex. I was proud she didn't name him Daemon or something just as ludicrous.
As her and Alex fall further for one another, her operation draws closer. As the almost certain end to their love draws close, Lena and Alex must make some hard choices, which made me believe Lauren Oliver was gonna pull a Twilight and make them confess their love and they run into the sunset all happy-like, but she ended it just as well as she started it, not rushed at all!
I was yelling at the book like a hardcore football fan at the end, I was so excited! If you have any taste at all, you must read this! I've had the sequel on preorder since September at least.

    Loved it!

I absolutely loved this book! It was so great. At first I was annoyed because I thought that Lauren Oliver just copied "Uglies" (because I mean even the cover looks the same :p) but once I got into it, it was different. I can't wait until the next book comes out! (Also, if you like this book, don't asume you will like her other novel "Before I Fall")
