I loved school so much and I was bright enough to even pass the exams though finding enough time to revise was a big problem. This was because I had a lot of work to do both before and after school, I tried all I could not to drop out of school but it was too much for me, I was always the late student to come to school yet others had started classes, my was dues to the hard life we lived, the support from our Granny was gradually getting less as she was also getting older as years passed by and whatever she could do to earn a living for the family was getting to its limit yet in actual sense there was not help either coming from our Parents or other relatives. Whenever I came late to class my teacher could do to me was to severely punish me, I remember him announcing at the assembly that if I did not stop coming late to school, I would be severely punished until I dropped out of school, that day when I came to school all the students told me what the teacher announced, I knew nothing will change but again I was so determined to study and complete my primary level despite all these challenges.
We all grew up well knowing that home is always the best place. We always knew that no one would love us better than our parents, we were always told that everyone in the neighborhood could easily do anything bad to us and we were always advised to report any information we got from any strange person around, we grew up with fear from outside home as we surely found security in our small house controlled by our grand mum and a few of our Aunties.
We were poor and we lacked a lot like any other poor families around but we were trained to always hide everything and hope for the best. We all grew up knowing that soon or later things would turn around and life would be better, matter of fact some of our aunties were almost completing university and our elder sisters were in high school so we were quite sure that one day, life would be better whatsoever. Everyone was looking up to education as the only possible way to eradicate poverty from home as we had several testimonies within the community and outside our community, we all had very big dreams to grow up, make a lot of money and not only take care of our family needs but also join hands to eradicate poverty.
Growing up in a disadvantaged neighborhood, I faced numerous challenges, including an unstable family environment and peer pressure. My struggles with drug abuse and destructive behavior led to violent outbursts, truancy, and brushes with the law. These choices eventually culminated in my imprisonment, leaving John at a crossroads in my life.
While incarcerated, I had time to reflect on the consequences of my actions and the impact they have had on my life. In a moment of clarity, I realized that if I continued down my path, I would end up trapped in a cycle of self-destruction. Determined to turn my life around, I committed myself to breaking free from the chains of addiction and violence.
Recognizing that my behavior was a manifestation of my deeper struggles, my sister convinced me to attend counseling sessions. Through therapy, I began to unravel the layers of pain and trauma that had contributed to my destructive choices. I confronted the wounds of my past and gradually gained insight into the impact my actions had on myself and those around me.
