Overview

The odyssey continues-the epic tale of the survivors of a spacecraft that crash-landed on a planet inhabited by a hostile, sentient alien race. Now in the aftermath of a civil war, the world of the atevi is still perilously unstable. As atevi and humans seek to coexist in peace, the fragility of the situation worsens as the world of the atevi is further fragmented into different camps.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

At the start of the stirring ninth entry in Cherryh's much praised Foreigner series (after 2006's Pretender), the atevi ruler Tabini has thwarted an attempt to overthrow him, though the usurper, Murini, has not yet been captured. Things appear to have settled back into routine, except for the hijinks of Cajeiri, Tabini's young heir, who has grown used to the liberties allowed a human child but not the heir to atevi rule. Then Cajeiri disappears and a troublesome Eastern lord is suspected of kidnapping him. Murini may also be involved. Human translator and diplomat Bren Cameron, along with the elderly but indomitable atevi matriarch Ilisidi and their deadly servants from the Assassins' Guild, must set off cross country in the dead of winter to attempt a rescue, while Cajeiri must prove that he is indeed worthy to be Tabini's heir. As always, Cherryh alternates complex political maneuvering with pell-mell action sequences in an intensely character-driven SF novel sure to appeal to the many fans of this series. (Feb.)

    This series is amazing

These books are all so interesting and intense. There are slow spots to be sure. But the storyline from book one to present are all so unique and engaging!

    A classic science fiction work

Bren Cameron is a paidhi, a facilitator and interpreter between the Atevi and the humans as he tries to prevent any crisis from blowing up between the two wary species. After two years in space with the world leader¿s heir Cajeiri and his powerful-grandmother llisidi, the aiji-dowager, they come back to a world in the middle of a civil war. Cajeiri¿s father has triumphed over the usurper Murini who is on the run in the south and everyone is working on the infra structure to bring it back together.----------- Although Bren is fond of Cajeiri, he has to cut his with the boy so that he can broker relationships with his own kind. However the boy is stubborn and doesn¿t want to conform to his parents¿ demands he eludes his body guards at every turn and showing how untraditional he is to various factions. Cajeiri is kidnapped by a faction in the east. The heir¿s father sends Bren, the only person he trusts, to find his son and take him away from the kidnappers if they fail the whole world will destabilize and be ripe for a violent revolution.----------------- DELIVERER, the direct sequel to PRETENDER, is classic science fiction focusing on a character that is human but is so immersed in an alien culture that he is more Atevi than human. His love for the leader¿s heir humanizes him by making him vulnerable and willing to die if it means saving the child. C.J. Cherryh has created an alien culture so structured that readers will believe the Atevi actually exist.-------------- Harriet Klausner
