Overview

This definitive work on dementia and related disorders has been fully updated and revised to reflect recent advances in this fast moving field.
The incidence of dementia continues to rise as the population of the world ages, and the condition represents one of the most significant challenges facing societies and health professionals in the next half-century. In this, the most comprehensive single volume work available on the subject, the editors have met this challenge by assembling a team of the world's leading experts on all aspects of the condition, from history, epidemiology and social aspects to the latest neurobiological research and advanced therapeutic strategies.

Dementia, Fourth Edition, is essential reading for all specialists in old age psychiatry, neurology and care of the elderly. It will also prove invaluable for all clinicians working with patients affected by dementia, including psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers and specialist nursing staff.

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Michael Joel Schrift, DO, MA (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: Continuing its role as the gold standard in dementia books, this edition has been fully updated to reflect the advances in our knowledge and understanding of dementia. As in previous editions, this one incorporates the viewpoints of a variety of international experts and continues to serve as a comprehensive survey of the current state of the field.
Purpose: The purpose, as in previous editions, is to cover all aspects of all types of dementia. The editors and chapter authors focus on solid core of information, the mainstream view of the field.
Audience: The authors do not specify the intended target audience, but the book would be useful for neurology and psychiatry residents, fellows in neuropsychiatry, behavioral neurology, geriatric medicine, geriatric psychiatry, psychologists, and other practitioners who care for the elderly.
Features: The book now contains 80 chapters and is divided into eight parts focusing on all aspects of the dementias. Part I is a general overview of dementia with an historical account, dementia criteria, the lived experience of dementia, and epidemiology. Part II focuses on mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer disease is the focus of part III. Part IV discusses the evolving literature on the overlap between Alzheimer disease and cerebrovascular disease. Vascular cognitive impairment is reviewed in part V. Part VI summarizes the literature on dementia in Lewy Body disease and Parkinson disease and part VII discusses focal dementing disorders such as primary progressive aphasia and frontal temporal lobar dementia. The last section of the book covers the neuropsychiatric disorders associated with cognitive impairment, including depression, schizophrenia, alcohol related syndromes, dementia in developmental disabilities, Huntington disease and prion disease. An added feature is that the book comes with an iPAD edition!
Assessment: This fourth edition continues to be a very useful book for anyone who diagnoses and treats patients with dementia. It brings together internationally known experts in the field and gives a broad perspective in this multifaceted problem.

This book on dementia incorporates the viewpoints of a variety of international experts and serves as a comprehensive survey of the current state of the field. The book's purpose is an attempt, in a single volume, to encompass all aspects of all types of dementia. According to the authors, because this is an expanding field, they attempted to concentrate on a ""solid core of information"" that is likely to remain part of the mainstream view of the field. The authors do not specifically mention who the intended target audience should be. The book would be useful to neurology and psychiatry residents, fellows in neuropsychiatry, behavioral neurology, geriatric medicine, geriatric psychiatry, psychologists, and other practitioners who care for the elderly. The book contains 53 chapters and is divided into two parts focusing on dementia of the Alzheimer type and non-Alzheimer dementia. The book covers the clinical features, the natural history of Alzheimer dementia, etiology, diagnosis, neuroimaging, therapeutic strategies, services for demented patients, the vascular dementias, dementia in psychiatric syndromes, dementia in neurological syndromes, and recently described dementia such as dementia of the frontal lobe type. This is a very useful book for anyone who diagnoses and treats patients with dementia. It brings together internationally known experts in the field and gives a broad perspective in this multifaceted problem. This book fills a need for a comprehensive textbook on this subject. I highly recommend it.
