Reviewer: Michael Joel Schrift, DO, MA (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This is the second edition of this up-to-date, multiauthored textbook detailing the dementing disorders in terms of diagnosis, management, and research. The authors are well-known and respected researchers and clinicians in this field.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a broad overview of dementia. The editor hopes to give practical suggestions for clinicians and provide a view of "cutting edge" research on the dementias. These goals have been achieved.
Audience: The intended audience is psychiatrists, neurologists, family practitioners, psychologists, nurses, and social workers who work with these patients. I also would recommend the book to psychiatry and neurology trainees, fellows in neuropsychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and behavioral neurology, and to geriatricians.
Features: The textbook features 491 pages divided into 14 chapters with 12 additional appendixes, a reference section, and an index. The chapters cover diagnostic issues, the psychobiology of the dementias, dementia work-up, differential diagnosis, psychological and behavioral management, pharmacological management, neuropsychological evaluation, dealing with family caregivers, legal and ethical issues, mobilizing community resources, nursing care, environmental structuring, advances in the biology of Alzheimer's disease, research in treating cognitive impairment. The appendixes contain various scales and questionnaires that are quite useful in dealing with these patents. The references were relevant and current. The index section was also useful.
Assessment: This is an excellent and timely addition to the field. Anyone who cares for patients and their families with these devastating disorders would benefit from reading this book.
