Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Billed as a manual for newbies entering Camp Half-Blood, this miscellany of all things Percy Jackson may satisfy readers eagerly awaiting the final installment in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, due in May. Three previously unpublished stories in which the son of Poseidon narrowly escapes death while cracking jokes read like scenes cut from previous novels-which is a compliment. Spliced between stories two and three are brief, comic "interviews" with Grover, Clarissa and other campers. Bland illustrations depicting the contents of Annabeth's trunk, a map of Camp Half-Blood and a short "sneak peek" at The Last Olympian pad the contents (barely) to book length; the inclusion of a crossword puzzle and a word search makes the book difficult to share. Not a must-read-but try telling that to rabid fans. Ages 10-up. (Feb.)

From The Critics
This companion book to the series Percy Jackson & The Olympians, set in the modern United States and based on Greek mythology, is set up as a field guide for avid fans. Percy Jackson, the 12-year-old son of Poseidon, continues his adventures with the Olympians in 3 short stories, accompanied by interviews with Camp Half-Blood (hence, the demigod designation) residents, his sidekick Annabeth's trunk, a camp map, plus puzzles and games for those who await the publication of the fifth and final volume in the series. Percy uses his wits, an arsenal of special powers, and his engaging personality to conquer dragons, monsters, and other challenges that lurk in and around 21st century New York City. The clever illustrations and captions add to the fan's appreciation of this clever, action-packed fantasy series and is a must-have for Riordan's many admirers. A preview of the upcoming series closer is included. Reviewer: Judith A. Hayn

Rick Riordan
Rick Riordan
Rick Riordan is best known for his bestselling YA series Percy Jackson and the Olympians and for a series of award-winning adult mysteries featuring San Antonio P.I. Tres Navarre.

Biography

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a terrific YA series by former middle school teacher and mystery writer Rick Riordan that revamps Greek mythology in a fun, fresh way kids find enthralling. A trouble-prone teen with attention deficit disorder and dyslexia, Percy is the half-blood son of Poseidon, one of 12 Olympian gods making mischief right here in 21st-century America. Praised by critics, librarians, and teachers, the Percy Jackson books have been honored with numerous awards and appear consistently on The New York Times bestseller list.

The series grew out of a sequence of bedtime stories Riordan invented for his son Haley -- who, at eight, had just been diagnosed with learning disabilities. Although Haley was having trouble in school, he loved the Greek myths and asked his dad to tell him some stories about the gods and heroes. Riordan ran through the standards from mythology, then began to invent new tales featuring some of the same characters and introducing a brave boy hero enough like Haley to make things interesting!

Haley begged his father to write the stories down, and in 2005, The Lightning Thief was published to excellent reviews. It was an instant hit with preteens, who loved the concept of a kid much like themselves -- i.e., embroiled in the everyday problems of school, family, and relationships -- embarking on heroic quests, soothing vengeful gods, and battling monsters.

In addition to Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Riordan also writes books for adults, most notably a series of high-octane Tex-Mex thrillers featuring private investigator Jackson "Tres" Navarre, a complicated loner with an offbeat pedigree. (Tres -- pronounced "Trace" -- is a tai chi master with a Ph.D. in medieval literature who turns to detective work when he is unable to find a teaching job!) The first novel in the series, 1997's Big Red Tequila, scooped the Anthony and Shamus Awards, two of the three most prestigious prizes for Mystery & Crime fiction. Riordan completed the trifecta when his sequel, The Widower's Two-Step, won the coveted Edgar Award in 1999.

Between the two series, Riordan remains incredibly busy. For several years, he balanced writing with teaching English to middle school students. Reluctantly, he has left teaching (a career he thoroughly enjoyed) in order to write full-time, but he still harbors hopes that someday he'll return to the classroom. Meanwhile, he makes frequent visits to schools and enjoys meeting young readers on his book tours.

Perfect filler while waiting for next Percy Jackson adventure!

This is a great quick read. The book is set up in a short story format, with each story being a mini-adventure. Recommended for anyone who enjoys the Percy Jackson series.

Barely has anything to do with the series

Although I like the series, this book has nothing to do with it. The interviews aren't the best, and Annabeth's trunk makes Annabeth look like a daughter of Aphrodite (without make up).
There are three short stories in it. They have nothing to do with the series. In fact, something major happens in one of them and Rick Riordan doesn't mention it in the last book - kind of pointless.
Also, he wrote those short stories for his blog, and they aren't his best.

    Really Fun!

This is a great addition to the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. It is best read after books 1 - 3, then there's no confusion on the characters. I really enjoyed it. Several of my 5th grade students have purchased it on their own after I read them parts of it.

    Loved it!

I bought this book for my teenage son and he loved it. It is true fantasy. His appreciation for the book has gotten me reading all Rick Riordan books too. It's a great story for a parent to share with a son, maybe a daughter too?!

    A decent book.

This book isn't brilliant, but it's got a few good side stories and the illustrations are really cool. The writing isn't Rick Riordan's best, but it's still pretty good. Basically, if you're reading the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, then you should read this in between book 4 and book 5. It explains a few things that will help with the plot. Overall, a four-star book.

A Great addition to the series! :)

The ENTIRE Percy Jackson series was AMAZING! I COMPLETELY LOVED EVERY BOOK! When The Demigod Files came out I HAD TO get it. Although it has three extra stories that fit well in the series, I was a little bit disappointed. I bought this book after I had read The Last Olympian and the main reason I got it was because I thought it would tie up some loose ends that are left at the end of The Last Olympian. If you haven't read The Last Olympian stop reading HERE! I was hoping The Demigod Files could answer if Percy did have more demigod siblings besides or not. I was also hoping to have some chapters with Percy and Annabeth as a couple. However, this book was meant to be read after The Battle of the Labrinth. (Between books 4 and 5) So those ends didn't get tied up. It is still a great read though! : )
