Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Veronica Bartles
Part of the "Systems of Government" series, this book explores the ups and downs and various forms of democracy. This is not your typical dry and boring reference book. Connolly explains the nuances of democratic government through the use of interesting stories and anecdotes. The book is divided into easy-to-follow sections, such as "What is Democracy?," "Does Democracy Work?" and "Does My Vote Really Count?" and an index and table of contents make the information contained in this book easily accessible. Vibrant, full-color photographs and illustrations effectively highlight the information on the page, and the sidebars provide fun and informative examples to further illustrate the main text. A small list of books and websites in the back of the book gives readers a few ideas for further study, and a detailed glossary provides definitions for virtually all of the unfamiliar terms in the book, making this resource easy to read and understand. Connolly strives to provide a fairly unbiased view of democratic government, although it seems somewhat evident that he is in fact a fan of democracy. This book would be a great jumping-off point for students studying democratic government. Reviewer: Veronica Bartles
