Overview

A compelling, contemporary fantasy with a vampire hero torn between two worlds, and an outsider in both, who seeks to discover the truth about his origins and find out where he truly belongs.

A series of gruesome animal/vampire attacks on humans threatens to undermine the vampires' secretive existence. As the attacks mount, so does the evidence, and it points to Bane and his newly learned Occupying skills. Yet Oliver, Emalie, and Dean suspect a larger, more sinister plot is afoot, with roots tracing back to Oliver's destiny, and possibly even further, to the mystery surrounding his human parents. Bane may hold the key to Oliver uncovering his past and changing his future, so it falls on Oliver, Emalie, and Dean to rescue Bane from the Half Light Consortium and clear his name.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Shirley Nelson
In Book 4 of the "Oliver Nocturne" series, thirteen-year-old (in vampire years) Oliver is looking forward to enjoying the last night of summer vacation with his best friends, human Emalie and zombie Doan. However, humans are being viciously attacked and murdered by a possessed leopard and Oliver begins to suspect his brother Bane may be responsible. To make matters worse, Oliver is stressed by the knowledge that the time is approaching when he must fulfill the ancient prophecy. Details of the hidden vampire life will delight young readers, particularly descriptions of the convenience store where bags of "blood-fried, spicy-hot triangles of alligator skin" are hidden behind ordinary bags of Doritos, and bags of blood reside among the bottles of sports drinks. Young readers should probably begin the series with the first book to avoid confusion. Reviewer: Shirley Nelson

Oliver, the Harry Potter of vampires.

The fourth in a series, Oliver's quest continues with new, challenging situations with parents and friends. Oliver's skills develop as he is faced with truths that have been hidden from him. He deals with new emotions and dilemma's that many young people will recognize, and that those of us a bit older will remember.

Oliver is dreading the start of the new school year. The last night before school is to start; he plans on meeting his friends Dean and Emalie at the zoo. While Oliver is waiting by the bat cages, police bust into the room, obviously searching for something. Oliver hides and then follows them outside. He runs into his friends, and the three hide in the bushes, watching the police action.

A boy around their age has been murdered. They overhear that they believe a jaguar has killed the boy. Oliver starts to have troubling thoughts. He ran into his brother Bane (aka Charles) on his way into the zoo. And Bane was occupying a jaguar. Oliver stumbles across a pendant with ancient markings on it. Figuring his brother had been wearing it, he pockets the necklace, and the threesome discreetly leaves the zoo.

As the days pass, other kids are murdered. And all signs point to the same jaguar. And to make matters worse, Bane hasn't returned home in days. Oliver's parents start to worry and go searching for Bane. When the Half Light come asking questions, Oliver keeps quiet, and then fills his parents in on what he knows. When his parents refuse to let Oliver help in the search, Oliver enlists the aid of his two friends.

Emalie is having problems of her own, controlling her Orani powers. And Dean's master, Lythia, has returned, calling Dean to serve her. Oliver now has to wonder who he can and can't trust. After obtaining information from the library, Oliver learns that Bane is being held inside the jaguar by a Nagual demon. After getting guidance from Dead Desiree, Oliver and Emalie seek out Bane.

The three friends come together to aide in releasing Bane from the jaguar. But along the way, Oliver must confront more of his history and his destiny. He believes Bane is trying to steal the prophecy from him, but Oliver may be further from the truth than he ever expected.

THE DEMON HUNTER kicks up the action and suspense a notch from the previous books. Oliver and his friends are developing their powers and stepping up their fight against those that are battling against them. The plot continues to build and now readers must wait for the continuation in THE ETERNAL TOMB, due out in April 2009.
