Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Set in the 26th century on Australia's Crescent Moon Bay, Somper's portmanteau of two fiction favorites-pirates and vampires-is a gleefully quick read. When lighthouse keeper Dexter Tempest passes away, heavily laden with debt, his 14-year-old twin children, Connor and Grace, find themselves suddenly homeless. The teens cannot bear the offer of sanctuary from the town's wealthy bank manager ("I'd rather die," says Connor), so they steal their father's boat and cast out to sea. A storm quickly dashes their vessel, and Connor is rescued by a passing pirate ship. Grace has been rescued, too, but by the Vampirate ship, "a dark ship that has been sailing through all eternity," the topic of a beloved shanty the twins' father always sang to them. The narrative alternates between the two ships, painting a vivid picture of life on a pirate ship while simultaneously stretching and teasing out the mystery of the vampirates for much of the book. Grace eventually meets the captain of her ship, an elusive figure who lets slip that he may have known their father-and later learns that she is to be the ship's new "donor." Somper deftly draws parallels to the real world-its hungers, its sicknesses, its gluttony-with his fascinating vampire captain, who imposes a strict regimen of "take only the blood you need" on his crew, ensuring that the donors remain healthy, too. An enigmatic conclusion leaves the galley door wide open for sequels. Ages 8-12. (Oct.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
From The Critics
This winning fantasy features both pirates and vampires with adventure, bloodcurdling action, and sinister characters. Twins Connor and Grace are shipwrecked in a storm as they flee home after their father's death. Connor is rescued by pirates, but Grace is saved by the mythical Vampirate's ship about which her father had always sung. In alternating chapters, Grace and Connor face one dangerous adventure after another in their new lives. Connor becomes a master swordsman and adapts to the difficult life of a pirate ship. Grace is sequestered and guarded by an array of terrifying, eerie shipmates who only roam the vessel at night but are not typical bloodthirsty vampires. Each is convinced that the other sibling has survived and tries to coax their dubious new shipmates to launch a search. Connor questions the justice and principles of pirates, and readers will identify with the young man who wants to prove himself to Captain Wrathe and the rest of the crew. Grace uses her instincts and bravery to solve the mystery of the vampire crewmen who are both courteous and victims of their fate. The remaining characters are stereotypical but interesting, with detailed descriptions of the vampires' appearance but little of the ship and the pirate crew. In a satisfying and exciting conclusion the siblings are reunited. The novel provides the mandatory chills and suspense and ends with a teaser, setting up a possible book two. Diehard vampire fans who do not need the gore and those enthralled by the Pirates of the Caribbean movies will eagerly read this title. Readers who enjoyed Iain Lawrence's novels, The Wreckers (Delacorte, 1998/VOYA February 1999) and Buccaneers (Delacorte, 2001) will also beinterested.

Eeeeeep! I l-o-v-e love this book!

When I first saw this book I didn't think much of it except that I needed something to read on the long drive home. Well, to my surprise I couldn't put it down, even when I got home. I totally love this book and suggest it...no matter how old you are.

    EPIC! INTENCE! ADDICTIVE!

Grate misfortune is bestowed appon the Tempist twins, Connor and Grace, when there father dies. If they are to stay in cresent moon bay there lives will be hell. So in a desprate attempt at a better life they look to the seas. Unfortunetly they are misfortunate again and are seperated when there boat is ship wrecked. Connor is rescued by a ship of pirates and Grace by a ship of Vampirates. Their primary gole is to see each other safe again.

This book is engaging and entertaning with its slightly more than occasonal laugh and tear. I do disagre with the discription of Grace being incredibly intelegent, she has book sarts sure but common sence um...no...

I recomend this sires to anyone who likes to read and if you dont like to read well this would be a good book to get you started on the path of a hard core book worm ;)

a pirates life is a wonderful life!!!!!

I thought this book was ever interesting. I am a stay-at-home mom who was unable to put the book down. It seemed like I was watching the story unfold in person. great attention to details and great attention to real life happenings. the Tempest twins seemed like average everyday children that ran out of luck. It seemed that both Conner and Grace learned many lessons about life and growing up while on different ships.
Towards the end of the book i was surpised by the adbrupt ending it took. I kind of thought something was starting to happening between Grace and lorcan but, that could change in the books to continue. Also I thought something was going to happen with Sidirdio and the Vampirate crew at the end because of what Sidirdio did while aboard the diablo.
But seriously, I couldn't put the book down and jumped straight into the next one. it was nothing at first of how i imaagined it too be. nothing at all like the twilight series or anything similar.

My graduates to the author for a wonderful children;s book. my son will definately add this to his collection when he is older. thank you.

One of the best books i've ever read.

Vampirates; Demons of the Ocean isn't like any other novel, it was exciting from beginning to end. Twins, Grace and Connor Tempest, lived in a lighthouse with their father, Dexter Tempest, who was the lighthouse keeper. He always sang an old shanty to Grace and Connor
about Vampirates. To them, it was just an old shanty, and had no truth or story to it. But then everything changed for them after their father's tragic death. Grace and Connor had nothing left. No family, no shelter, nothing. The only option they had was to be a part of another family, Mr. Busby's family, or to go to an orphanage. But instead, they decided to set sail alone on their father's ship. They didn't plan everything out very well, and after a terrible storm, their ship sank and they were separated. Connor was rescued by a pirate ship, where he made friends who supported him, and who taught him how to swordfight. He had a chance to live the life of a pirate, while Grace was rescued by a vampirate ship. She was aboard with a crew of vampires, which helped her except for one that was dangerously bloodthirsty. She made friends also, and learned about the lifestyle of these vampirates. But Grace and Connor's only concern was to find eachother and to be united again. These twins never thought they would have the adventure of a lifetime.

Justin Somper mixed two totally different topics to write a one of a kind novel. It's filled with adventure and thrill. But not only that, there's death, sadness, trust, friendship, and of course, vampires and pirates. I would recommend it to anyone who likes these topics. It
takes the lives of two kids somewhere they never thought they would end up. Vampirates was a very interesting book, I was glued to it from
beginning to end. I think it will keep it's readers on the edge of their seat, eager to find out what will happen next. It's definitely worth
reading, and a page turner. I will consider reading his other books, and reading the rest of the "Vampirates" books. His style of writing really
satisfied me, and I'm sure that I'll like his other books.

    Hmmmmm......

This book is really not an easy one to review.
There are the pros, and then there are the cons.
The story line is good, even if it was a little confusing with every other chapter being about different characters. Speaking of which, the characters were not very well developed; you see a few characterization traits, but not many. This is a book that I would not recommend for classrooms, nor for book clubs or discussions. I really enjoyed reading this book just for fun, and my pen name says the rest. I hope that the next books will be just a little bit better written.
