    A good solid start

I was doubtful, but it was an overall good story and a good start for a series. No forgettable child come into preordained greatness. No angst. No pathetic self doubt. No gorgeous man of inflexible morals hurting others, but inevitably is in the right. Just a clever man doing what he has to do and not devoid of ethics or morals. They just aren't those written by noble philosophers, safely ensconced in luxury and spare time. They exist in spite of a lack. I look forward to more.

    best books review.

Malden is a thief in the free city of ness. Malden is soon pulled into a plot to steal the cornet of burgrave all because Malden hope to get real freedom that cutbill, lord of the underworld promised him. Malden well soon face more than he bargained for.

I really liked the plot it was simple but exciting. The characters were well thought out and interesting and I really like how the story came together. There was a couple times that I felt my mind wonder away from the book but the author soon pulled you back with some fun action.

I felt that the last 200 pages where the best. A lot more was going on and the characters really came together. I'm a really big fantasy fan but normally there is a lot more dragon, elves and dwarfs in them this book took a different path and you heard little about fantasy creatures but I still found I was really into the book.It was not a fast read but it was well worth the time reading it.

I would give the book 4 stars and say that you really need to take the time reading this there is a lot to like about the book if you give it a chance.

Although the author sets a nice world, the characters are predictable and the story-line is cookie-cutter. After reading R.R. Martin, and Joe Abercrombie - picking this series up (yes all three books - I was going on vacation) was sadly disappointing. The rating I gave was based on the dwarven discriptions and the banished and imprissoned elves which was well done (IMHO). Unfortunately, the dialog wasn't deep and the fight scenes were really poor. Really poor! (At one point a main character loses a weapon in a courtyard melee - it goes flying from his hand or some such - not one minute later it's in his hand...hmm? How was that done when I just read about everything that character did within that minute?) Forgivable sure - but later in the novel the author makes a clear-cut mistake in referencing the speaker instead of another character...Not so forgivable - amateurish. I guess if your going for baby-steps above the popcorn RA Salvatore (you know - where everyone lives and there's never any real threat of a main character actually staying dead) then you might like this series...however, if a touch of realism is your interest - and characters actually perish and interact like individuals - stick with Martin, Abercrombie or Abnett. Just my 2c...

Intricate story and characters with complex motives in a great setting!

Malden is just the kind if thief I was looking for in a book. The story twists and turns nonstop. It is very hard to set this book down! The best part is this book is great on its own, but it sets the tone for the other books in the trilogy that keep getting better! I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy.

    Good read

The plot was simple but well executed. The characters are more than simple stereotypes they have depth to them. There is a good mix of intrigue action and dialogue that blends together to make a good story. Plus there are some nice plot twists in the book as well. I liked it and i reccomend it to anyone who likes fantasy nivels
