Reviewer: Azfar Siddiqui, BDS, MSc (University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine)
Description: This fourth edition of this book provides essential information on the dental management of patients suffering from commonly occurring medical disorders. The previous edition was published in 1988.
Purpose: The stated purpose of this book is to provide dental students and practitioners with basic understanding of commonly occurring medical disorders, what conditions to be aware of, and what precautions to take in the dental management of these patients.
Audience: This book is aimed at students as well as practicing dentists. In my opinion this is an important topic and good understanding is essential for all dental and dental auxiliary personnel.
Features: Although this book could have benefited from some color pictures, the black-and-white illustrations are of good quality and are well conceived. The quality of the references is good in most cases but varies from chapter to chapter. The summary in the beginning of the book is excellent, providing to the point information that guides the reader toward more detail by giving page references.
Assessment: This is an essential book for every dentist, especially those in general practice as well as dental residents in postgraduate training. The book is written in a simple, attractive manner. Finding a particular subject is easy because of the table of contents and an elaborate index. Many up-to-date changes have been made in the new edition, especially the chapter on AIDS and infection control.
