Editorial Reviews

Stephen Kun Chung Ho
This is a full sized, spiral bound book of emergency office response procedures and protocols. The content is organized according to the medical emergency that is being managed. Physically, the combination of the spiral binding and the quick-reference tabs makes accessing the required information easy and quick -- both vitally important in medical emergencies where every second counts. As indicated, "this manual has been designed to assist dental practitioners in establishing basic office protocols for the management of the most common dental office medical emergencies." As the percentage of ambulatory dental patients with significant medical histories continues to increase, it is imperative that all dental offices be prepared for common medical emergencies. To this end, the book is needed and the format in which the authors present the information allows them to accomplish their aim superlatively. The primary audience for this book is the dental practitioner. In an office emergency situation, the dentist often acts as the quarterback for the treatment of the patient and may be the only individual qualified to administer the required emergency medications; still, all members of the office staff should have a degree of familiarity with the emergency protocols so that they will be able to act as an effective member of the resuscitation team. All office staff would therefore benefit from reading these emergency protocols and having a familiarity with the location of the emergency equipment. The authors are from diverse backgrounds. They are leaders in their respective fields of pharmacology, emergency medicine, oral medicine and dental hygiene. This book is divided into threesections -- office preparedness, dental office medical emergencies, and procedures and protocols. The second section is largest, with succinct diagnostic clues, treatment algorithms, and post-resuscitation recovery instructions according to the medical emergency being managed. Basic office guidelines on infection control, staff vaccinations, and other prudent preventive actions are covered in the third section. Included in the final section is an up-to-date decision-tree for the delivery of antibiotic prophylaxis for in-patients at risk of developing sub-acute bacterial endocarditis following dental manipulation. Certainly the strength of the book is how well the material is organized and presented, making it easy to understand. This format makes this text immediately practical and an effective way to review the newest standards of care in any office. The only shortcoming is the timeliness of writing and publication. When the newest Emergency Cardiac Care guidelines are published later this year, there may be changes in the area of Basic Life Support that may impact certain sections of this text. I believe this text to be of high quality groundbreaking nature. A summary of the dental office medical emergencies has been long overdue in a format such as this one that dentists can purchase and utilize immediately in their practices.
