Overview

It familiarizes children with many of the tools and procedures they are likely to encounter during their visit, allowing them to become more comfortable with dentists and oral hygienists. By showing how specific instruments are used to examine or treat them, why they are used, and how they work, this book helps children develop positive attitudes about their visits to the dentist. Children are invited to participate in a section entitled “Your Job,” while “Points for Parents” offers advice on discussing the book with children. It also suggests activities to do before and after a trip to the dentist to help young patients become comfortable with the visit and procedures. The Dentist and You is illustrated with photographs of children visiting dental offices, and with line drawings.

A trip to the dentist does not have to be a scary thing. Although many adults still cringe at the thought of a check up, children prove to do very well with dental visits especially when they know beforehand what to expect. Swanson has developed an interesting, informative book explaining what happens at the dentist office. The reader is taken step by step through an average office visit. An introduction to procedures, equipment basic care of teeth and oral hygiene in a simplistic non-threatening way will help to prepare children ahead of time. Questions children might ask are anticipated and answered in sidebars throughout the book, setting up some great discussion starters for parents sharing the book with a child. The illustrations and colorful graphic layout make the book visually appealing and the portrayal of an Asian family in the photos helps to fill a multicultural gap as well. 2002, Annick Press,

Gr 2-4-Although it's probably impossible to describe dental visits without at least a little bit of traumatic detail, this title is mostly reassuring in its presentation. Aside from the picture of a young patient about to receive an injection of novocaine, the information and full-color photos are straightforward and nonthreatening. The text addresses fillings, cleanings, tooth sealants, X rays, and impressions, and includes a page of hints for parents to prepare their children for exams. Each spread has tips for children while they are in the chair: "Hold your mouth open"; "Take deep, slow breaths"; "Close your eyes and think about something you really like." Reading this book may allow children to sleep the week before their appointment.- Christine A. Moesch, Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, NY Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
