Georgia Caraway, executive director, and Kim Cupit, curator of collections, for the Denton County Museums, collaborated to create this companion book to their popular historical photographic compilation, Images of America: Denton, also published by Arcadia Publishing.

Denton County museum officials are taking advance orders for the latest book on the history of Denton.

Postcard History Series: Denton County, available for purchase starting next week, reproduces 214 historical postcards collected by county residents Jim and Tricia Bolz. It is the second of four books historical officials are contracted to publish through Arcadia Publishing.

"We're very pleased. It's very exciting," said Georgia Caraway, executive director of the Denton County Museums.

The book's first seven chapters are on the city of Denton and the last chapter is on Denton County communities. Caraway and Kim Cupit, museum curator of collections, selected the images from more than 550 cards in the Bolz collection.

Work for this book was different from the first book, Images of America: Denton, Caraway said.

"For the first book, we selected the photos and wrote the histories; in this case we had the postcard and then we had to go and research the [images]," she said.

Caraway noted that the postcards aren't typical images those familiar with Denton would see. These include a trifold postcard that was used as a photograph in the first book and will now appear in the second book along with its history and the content from the back of the card.

Tricia Bolz said that postcard was one of her favorites for the story behind the panoramic photo.

"It had to do with a civilian being bayoneted during a visit of Howard Taft to Denton," Bolz said. "After researching it — there are reports that it actually happened — the story to us was more interesting then the postcard itself."

Bolz said she hopes the book will give people some understanding of Denton history and some information that's new to them.

"And it may be a draw for other collectors and inspire them to put a collection of their own together," she said. "For me, it's a personal account of the history. The picture shows us a great deal of how things have changed, and the personal account gives us a glimpse of what happened in the past."

Caraway hopes the postcard book will continue the success of Images of America, which is now in its third reprinting. Two more local history books are in the works — Then and Now: Denton and a black history book.

The book will be available for purchase at many local retail outlets, and 400 copies will be available at the Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum.

Caraway called it a "wonderful fundraising device for the museums."

The Bolz family and the county museums will each get half of the proceeds from the book.

"This is a great companion piece to the first book," Caraway said.

"This book not only appeals to people who care about Denton and Denton County; it also appeals to postcard collectors."
