Essential. Trusted. Indispensable. Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology has established itself as the preeminent source of education and information in its field. This much-expanded third edition relies on advances in neurobiology and recent clinical developments to explain the concepts underlying drug treatment of psychiatric disorders. In addition to redrawn art, an improved and more readable layout, and 30% more illustrations, the Third Edition has four all-new chapters on Psychiatric Genetics, Chronic Pain and Functional Somatic Syndromes, Disorders of Sleep, and Disorders of Cognition. Covered within are new neurotransmitter systems; theories on schizophrenia; clinical advances in antipsychotic and antidepressant therapy; coverage of attention deficit disorder and drug abuse; and new coverage of sleep disorders, chronic pain, and disorders of impulse control. This volume is indispensable for all students and professionals in mental health, enabling them to master the complexities of psychopharmacology.

Doody's Review Service

"Stephen Stahl is one of the most recognizable names in psychopharmacology. He is an inspiring teacher who has a knack for synthesizing complex scientific information for students, residents, psychiatrists, and nonmedical mental health practitioners....[H]e has started publishing psychopharmacology books that are not only very readable and up-to-date, but are in my opinion the most creatively illustrated texts of psychopharmacology. My trainees rave about his books and quote them often."
--Journal of Clinical Psychiatry

“All of Dr. Stahl’s writing is characterized by clarity of presentation and a notable ability to transform complicated scientific principles into readily understood prose. Characteristically, he illustrates his instructions with informative, charming, and sometimes witty cartoon figures and diagrams. Dr. Stahl has a gift for teaching, and it is a pleasure to recommend this book.”
Journal of Clinical Psychiatry

“Essential reading … I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who works with psychotropic drugs - or who has the task of teaching others about them!”
American Journal of Psychiatry

“Essential Psychopharmacology offers a wide range of readers an engaging and comprehensive view of psychopharmacology. It is highly recommended to both novice and experienced researchers, who stand to gain a new or renewed appreciation for the complexity and beauty of how the nervous system mediates the behavioral effects of drugs."

Reviewer: Raj Tummala, MD (Wyeth Pharmaceuticals)
Description: This is the latest update of companion to Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology that focuses on the treatment of depression and bipolar disorder.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a reader friendly, easy to understand book on the fundamentals of psychopharmacology related to depression and bipolar disorder.
Audience: It is targeted at anyone dealing with the treatment of patients with affective disorders including students, residents, clinicians, nurses, and psychopharmacologists.
Features: This new edition captures the shift from the receptor model to brain circuits and signal transduction cascades. The book covers three topics: mood disorders, antidepressants, and mood stabilizers. The first chapter discusses the nomenclature, diagnosis, and course of depressive and bipolar disorders and details brain circuits that are responsible for producing the symptoms that are associated with them. New to this edition is information on brain imaging studies that help in identifying brain regions that are affected. The chapters on antidepressants and mood stabilizers capture the latest advances in drug development as well as drugs in the pipeline. This edition covers depression in women in greater detail with a focus on estrogen. Symptom-based algorithms of depression and bipolar disorder are useful in helping clinicians decide the class of drugs for the respective symptoms. Unique to Dr. Stahl's books are the illustrations, which have been expanded in this edition to capture the latest advances. Information is presented in conceptual form that makes it easier to read and understand and is augmented with more graphs and tables.
Assessment: This remains a user friendly book while covering all the latest developments in psychopharmacology. The method of teaching through illustration and conceptual form should continue to make it very popular.
