Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This title opens with two well-told stories, one of a thirteen-year-old girl suffering from depression, and a second of an eleven-year-old boy whose father suffers from bipolar disorder. The definition, causes and types of depression are clearly outlined. (It would, however, be more accurate to refer to a psychologist as a clinical psychologist because psychologist alone is a generic term referring to many types, and not necessarily those with clinical skills.) The chapter on living with depression and "What you can do" provides useful information. A point that is not included is the importance of dialogue about medications between the prescribing psychiatrist and the patient receiving the medication. A brief chapter on the history of depression is intriguing. Mention is made of famous people who suffered from the condition. Interesting pictures, diagrams, and useful sidebars are included on each page spread. While information is clearly presented in the text, understanding it is complicated here by the density of text and readability of font type throughout the book. The book contains a glossary of words that are in bold in the text, an index, and "Find Out More" resource lists of organizations, books and websites. This is a useful resource book for school reports and for those experiencing depression. The author is a former Gifted and Talented teacher. Other titles in the "Health Alert" series include Alzheimer's Disease, Heart Disease, Lung Cancer, Asthma and Juvenile Diabetes. 2005, Benchmark Books/Marshall Cavendish, Ages 9 to 12.

Gr 4-7-Without becoming overly technical, the authors explain the causes, physiology, treatments, and complications associated with these conditions. The books are well organized, and each title opens with a case history of someone who suffers from the disease. Depression is especially useful for readers seeking up-to-date information, explaining that there are different types of depression, and that many are caused by a chemical imbalance. The text boxes in each book include lists of famous people who suffer from the diseases, explain what readers can do to help people with the conditions, and offer various warning signs. The photos are colorful and although most are merely decorative, some are startling, including the brain scans of a patient with Alzheimer's and one who suffers from depression. These solid introductions deserve a wide audience.-Christine A. Moesch, City of Tonawanda Public Library, NY Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
