Children's LiteratureNeither doctors nor the general public recognized depression as a disorder in children and teens until the 1980s. Young people were supposed to be happy and carefree. Now, we know that teens can have such extreme feelings of sadness and hopelessness that they may contemplate suicide. Judith Peacock explains such causes of depression as stress, changes in brain chemicals, genetics and physical or emotional shock. She identifies various types of mood disorder and discusses the possible side effects of common antidepressant medications, like Prozac and Paxil. A useful list of symptoms that young people may notice in themselves or a friend is included, as well as ways to get help. The subject of depression is treated in a very straightforward and easily understood manner. Each chapter includes an overview and thought-provoking points to consider, such as whether the reader thinks it is a good idea for schools to identify at-risk students and screen them for depression. The book is easy to read, with bolded topics and subtopics, as well as anecdotal sidebars, and small but effective teen photos. It is part of the series, "Perspectives on Mental Health." 2000, LifeMatters/Capstone Press,
