Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
World War Two is raging across the globe and the final outcome is in doubt. In an effort to capture a German Enigma machine designed to create unbreakable codes, the Allies send two highly trained Special Forces soldiers into occupied Europe. The two operatives are both fully trained and committed to their mission but they come from very different backgrounds. Nigel Brett is an experienced British commando who has fought in combat, seen comrades die, and killed German soldiers. Aaron Donovan is an American Army first lieutenant trained in special operations but who has never actually been in combat. Now, both of them will be parachuted into occupied Denmark charged with dynamiting a German submarine, U-505, and expropriating an Enigma machine. In the end, both these men fulfill their duty albeit with results far different then they intended. Written as part of a sequence of historical novels set in wartime circumstances, M. Zachary Sherman's "Bloodline" series combines fast paced narrative with comic book style illustrations. This combination will appeal to a niche audience of readers interested in military fiction and graphic novels but there are some defects in this particular publication. The short story nature of the narrative does not allow readers to actually get to know or appreciate the main characters. As a result, when losses occur, they bear little meaning for the reader. Due to this weakness, Depth Charge is a well-intended but flawed work that is over before the reader really engages with the subject matter. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
